clubby2084 Posted October 15, 2010 Report Posted October 15, 2010 (edited) Just two years ago I did the opposite trip from Darwin to Brisbane. The reason it costs so much to get freight to Darwin is because it is classed as a remote area. Â To ship my Corolla from Brisbane to Darwin cost me $1800, to ship it from Darwin to Brisbane $400. WTF. Trucks go back empty so, they take anything for next to nothing. Â Loving this thread, good read. Hope the Rona gets here in one piece. Any pics of the drive up?. mungi mods Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 day 2  left Mt Isa and drove to Comoweal which is the border with Northern Territory, had breaky and drove the 10 Km to the Border suddenly the road got wider and much better quality. Nt speed limit is 130 and police do not patrol outside of townships  Bought the most expensive fuel in Australia at a place called Barkly Homestead.. $1.79.9 :hmm: got about 10 km from three ways which is the turn for adelaide/darwin and had a high speed blow out drivers right front .no Problem put the spare on ...  kept driving and about 400km further up the road the spare blew..  what to do, middle of bumf@$k nowhere ...  213 km back to the nearest town or 125km forward to another "town"  found a steak knife in the boot and proceeded to cut the tyre off the rim.. :rolls:  all good drove 125km on the steel rim.. get to the "town" servo burnt down 3 yrs ago, went to the pub asked around , old horder had a tyre which he fitted to the "other "spare all good drove to Katherine... arrived in Katherine at n10pm last night and the servo was full of drunk and abusive COONS.. i was like f@$k this the car will be stripped and i'll be bashed and robbed, so i left there with 1/2 a tank of fuel all good  get to the next town Pine river, servo is shut so i see a sign saying fuel in 32km at emerald springs ok  get 20.7 km out of pine river and car stops  out of fuel  FFFFFFFF UUUUUUUUU  road trains are going by 1 ft away at 120km an hr decide to have a sleep...  got up this morning and hitched a ride to Emerald Springs ...guess what .Pumps were removed 2 yrs ago... FFFF UUUU  so hitched a ride back to Pine River and bought a 10 litre gerry can filled it =$50.00  hitched back to car ,filled it then drove it back to Pine River for fuel  all good  the last 213km were as uneventful as the first 2800 kms  I am in Darwin , we both made it, both are in as good a shape as when we left within reason.  fly home Tomorrow  the end  some pics ..      Quote

Mungi, tonight many well deserved drinks are on me. You're a friggin legend.  I just hope the return journey will be as eventful! (Darwin to Perth via east coast...)  The spirit of the road trip lives on!!! Quote
altezzaclub Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 Well done that man!! Â Great story and one of those epics to tell your kids... Â I hitched up there with a girlfriend in the 1970s, took days and days... I remember sleeping on the traffic island in the middle of Katherine, which was a small one-horse town back in those days.. hoping for a road train to pick us up. Â Mr Sandshoe... pics when you do the next part of the trip please! :laff: Quote

clubby2084 Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 drove to Katherine... arrived in Katherine at n10pm last night and the servo was full of drunk and abusive COONS.. i was like f@$k this the car will be stripped and i'll be bashed and robbed, so i left there with 1/2 a tank of fuel all good  LOL - yeah Katherine is a great place to drive through, quickly. Should have warned you about that one. Honest, it's the only place on the planet you can smell before you see it. If the world needed an enima, Katherine is where they'd stick the tube...  And another good first impression of our "drunk and abusive" er, wildlife.  Welcome to Darwin, thanks for the story and the pic's. Trev Posted October 18, 2010 Report Posted October 18, 2010 Was this car something special or are they really hard to get in the NT? Quote
7shades Posted October 18, 2010 Report Posted October 18, 2010 (edited) Anything over 15 years old and not completely rusted in half or smashed up to buggery is hard to get in the NT :P Edited October 18, 2010 by 7shades Quote
