And you want to go with a NA SR20 or 13B because you can't have a turbo? Then I think you'd be a little shocked to find out that you won't be able to have those either as you would need an engineers certificate for them to be legal, and P-platers aren't allowed vehicles which require engineers certificates for performance modifications. So in short, suck it up and wait until you get your full license, then do as you please (as long as it is still legal). Edited October 7, 2010 by Hiro Protagonist Quote
ke70dave Posted October 7, 2010 Report Posted October 7, 2010 (edited) man these threads are getting more frequent. you need to decide for yourself taking into account: your skills your connections your budget your prefernces and the legalities. the top three things determine what is "better" what is "Easier". and the 4th one determins if your allowed to do it. reasearch, make notes, research make phone calls, resarch, then you will know for yourself. instead of asking a bunch of randoms, who don't know you, or your personal situation, on what engine is "better" and "easier" for you... oh and if your on the P's like hiro suggests (which seems likely given the L plate i can see...), forget all engine conversion, for street use you a stuck with the 4k. skd30 Posted October 7, 2010 Report Posted October 7, 2010 5k motor is about as big as its gonna get for you. I'm pretty sure your allowed a 15% increase in capacity (from memory, your the p plate check it out its all on the rta website) without having to get an engineer to sign it off. As long as no fabrication of engine/gearbox mounts etc are required. Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted October 7, 2010 Report Posted October 7, 2010 Technically a 5K is greater than a 15% increase - 4K is 1290cc, 115% of 1290cc = 1483.5cc, 5K is 1496cc, but it's the kind of thing that could easily get ignored, especially if the RTA go "it's a 1.3L, 115% of 1.3L is basically 1.5L, the 5K is a 1.5L, so it's ok". MR KE30 Posted October 8, 2010 Report Posted October 8, 2010 there is no easy way to do things like this both ways well cost you lots of money time and heart ache unfortunately, i would maybe save some coin up till you get your full licence then go all out mate choice of engine should not be a hard choice just go with what excites you ! shaded_shadows_KE55 Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 $10.000 3 years and counting.... sr20de this is with me doing most of the work. also don't forget no matter what you choose to do you also need to consider that your brakes, suspension, engine management and fuel delivery systems need to be changed/modified. as-well as changes to your cross member (engine mounts), modified tail shaft, differential, gearbox mount, radiator, etc etc etc i could fill ur post up with changes, so please do your research and good luck. cinky Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 (edited) I'm not sure its 15% or zero engine mods. either way 15% gain probably isnt worth spending the money on. like most serious modifiers do, start with everything else first so brakes handling then after all is done and you are on your opens which is 4/5 years away then you can go the direction you want to go. who knows you may even be bitten by the bogan bug and go for v8s Edited February 8, 2011 by cinky Quote
