Hey, recently i've been interested in buying a 1980 or so corolla as i'm getting my license soon and the new turbo rule is coming in to play... I have searched everywhere for information on the differences between these models..

Which ones weren't originated in Australia?

What model would be the easiest to bolt mods straight onto?

What model had the original quad headlights?..

Any information on these models would be very helpful!

Thanks!

ae70 didnt come to aus (there are a few around, not many)

the other two did

depends what you want to bolt in, suspension is all the same, ae70/71 run an A motor, Ke70 run a k motor

What model had the original quad headlights?..

none in AUS, its the te71's in overseas countries that have quads.

too broad of a question mate:P

And probably damned hard to find in Australia too...

If you are just getting your licence... exactly how many mods are you allowed to do to your car from a legal perspective? I got the impression these days mods were a no no for a newly licensed driver?

NSW Vehicle and passenger conditions for P1 and P2 licence holders:

"Engine performance modifications that require an engineers' certificate (are prohibited)"

That means no 4AG in a corolla if you want to be legal. Most other engine mods should be ok though.

Early 80's common Australian corollas are KE70, AE71 or AE82.

There's heaps of info around on all but basically all you need to know is ->

AE71:

RWD

4AC with 87hp

Slanty front only

Not many bits around to make your engine faster

Easier to do 4AG engine swap (4AGE = 120/130hp, 4AGE 20valve = 160hp, 4AGZE = 165hp)

KE70:

RWD

4KC with 60hp

Most are square front, later ones were slanty

Lots of bits around to make your engine faster

Easy to do 5KC engine swap (70hp?)

AE82:

FWD

4AC with 87hp OR 4AGE with 120HP

Hatchback, liftback or sedan

Lots of bits around to make your engine faster

Personally I'd say

AE71 if you don't want to mod your engine or plan to put a 4AG engine in later.

OR KE70 if you want to mod your engine and / or like the square front.

OR AE82 if you want power, don't mind FWD and like the hatch or liftback.

Please correct any of my mistakes.
