wasn't the italian who did the gasket, he just did the head the same way he did all the Italian sport cars he worked on which is why he shaved too much off the head.

I did have a customer turn up and say her Rover SD was getting too hot so she thought she'd drive it down, but on the way steam started coming out and eventually it stopped & wouldn't turn over on the starter...

I went out to tow it in later and hit the key just in case, and it fired up immediately! No water in it at all, but replacing the leaking hose got it back on the road as though it had never siezed.

You never know your luck!

Used to be a speed shop in Brisbane called GP Cars. They ran a corolla engined road race open wheeler very competitively in the late 60`s and early 70`s. They made no secret of the fact that they used to use a copper shim head gasket and araldite on the engine because the compression was so high. Never blew a head gasket again. The thing used to go like snot too.

Cheers.

I blew the head gasket on my AE71, and couldn't be farked replacing the water every time it blew out after driving about 15 kays, so I did the clever thing and removed the entire radiator and rad hoses, and drove it for 3 weeks to work and back. (about 4 kays each way)

A radiator technician used to visit my work, and so i asked him hypothetically how long a car could run for without a radiator... he suggested about thirty seconds to a couple of minutes, so I showed him what i was driving, and he almost fell over.

(I also drove it to Toyospares in Bayswater and asked the guys to have a look under the hood to see if they could tell me what radiator i should be using, that gave them a chuckle when they saw I was driving it without a radiator. they know how good Toyota motors are...)

I have a mate who works in a wreckers. After a few cases of knock of drinks on a Friday arvo they have bet's over how long an engine will last without water/coolant. Start up wreck, rev engine to around 2000 to 3000rpm and wait until it stops.

Apparently, Corolla engines are some of the most robust. Either lasting until boredom sets in, or not stopping at all.

But who here didn't know that...

I had a ke20 years ago that had passed its use by date, so in a drrunken stupor, a couple of mates and I decided to do the same. Drained water, started, brick on the accelerator and let her rip. More beers while the old girl revved its guts out, but it just wouldn`t die. More beers and a mate pulled a 303 rifle out of his boot and put a well aimed shot through the front mudguard about level with the middle of the engine. The revving ceased straight away, but when we lifted the bonnet the only damage was to the distributor cap. I didn`t try but I reckon that if the cap was replaced it would have started again.

Just goes to prove that K motors are actually bullet proof.

Cheers.

...I live in a small town and one just doesn`t shonk people and get away with it here....

... give the valves a quick lap, chuck a head gasket in and see if its got enough compression to start. If it does, its outa my life real quick before it really blows up...

Cheers.

...I was thinking that a thin skim of araldite between the block and gasket and head and gasket should sort out the warpage issue and I`ll just take a punt that the cam will sit ok....

Cheers.

Am I the only one reading this? :blinks:

Along time ago in a galaxy far away, I was a first year apprentice. One of my Friday jobs was to check the oil and water on the bosses ute. Genuine 1975 HJ Sandman, poo brown, 308, 4speed with over 1 million ks.

One day I was doing my thing and got distracted, and forgot to put the radiator cap back on. He drove it home, about 30 odd kays, giving it heaps, as always. It started pinging and loosing power, so he just flicked it over to petrol and kept driving.

The temp and fuel gauge dash illumination lights didn't work, so he had no idea about the engine temp. Drove it 'till it stopped. Got about 25 ks into the trip. When it stopped, he popped the bonnet and saw the no cap. Called his wife, to pick him up. Next day, went back with water and a cap, started first kick and drove it home.

On the Monday he opened me up, and let me know what I'd done.

He still kept driving it.

3 months later I changed the oil, and honestly, I'd never smelt anything like it.

After 6 months I talked him into restoring it, because even then Sandman utes were rocking horse shit. He made me do a bulk of the shitty jobs.

I saw him recently and he's still driving it. Warm 308, Supra 5 speed (my idea), and triple gas tanks under the floor.

Until this day, when I close a bonnet, I ALWAYS check the radiator cap!
