Jeremys_online Posted September 16, 2010 Report Posted September 16, 2010 Hello, i have a problem with my ke70... On some occassion's my car will start, but when i turn it off after a while it wont start. it either starts really well and quick or itll crank really slow until it just gives up and then it wont even try to crank. i just had a second hand starter motor installed that was in good condition, my alternator apparently could be better. I thought it was the alternator but i put a brand new battery in and still it didnt start even though it was fully charged. I changed the battery terminals and that didnt work either... needed to be done anyway. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks! :-) Quote
altezzaclub Posted September 16, 2010 Report Posted September 16, 2010 Ha! Couldn't post during this 'attack site block' stuff.. Anyway- Check the earth return to the battery. The motor to chassis strap and the chassis end of the battery negative. Another problem might be in the fusible links, the three that come off the starter motor. One might be broken inside the insulation, although that would affect the key power more than the starter itself. Are you sure the other starter you got had a good solenoid?? Quote
Jeremys_online Posted September 17, 2010 Author Report Posted September 17, 2010 Hey, thatnks for your help! ill try what you said. I didnt check the solenoid for the starter, maybe i can recondition my old one see what happens. It seems to be affecting other areas of my car now. For some reason when i hill-start my car whenever i put the clutch in the car will just turn off, unless i keep the revs going but if the clutch is in and i stop reving it will just turn off. rather unusual. Thanks again Quote
altezzaclub Posted September 17, 2010 Report Posted September 17, 2010 Will it idle at other tims OK?? or are you fighting with a blocked idle jet or an air leak ? Oh- and when it turns off, do you still have ignition light On?? So it stalls with ignition on rather than loses elctricity. Quote

Na, it just started doing it, it can't even idle, it just stalls as soon i put the clutch in, yeah the ignition light is on when it turns off. The electrics seem to be working fine. I havent had problems with the the idle before, apart from my accelerator sticking occasionly. I'm not sure about the air leak ill have to check, my cars half way down the street cause i couldnt get it back up home haha. Quote

Thanks again When you say "turns off" do you mean it shakes and stalls? Or does it quietly stop? Does it only do this on hills? Carby Float level / fuel pump / fuel tank. I had a crap 4k once that threw it's thrust bearings into the sump. Motor ran OK except I couldn't start it with the clutch in. (How tough are these k engines?!!!) Get someone to step on the clutch while you watch the crank pulley. If it moves in and out that will be your problem. All of your other problems are pointing to electrical or fuel supply, but this one is mechanical. Do you try to start with the clutch in or in N with the clutch out? Quote
altezzaclub Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 Sounds like two set of problems Jeremy- one of not starting which must be starter related somewhere, and one of not idling. Quote
Jeremys_online Posted September 18, 2010 Author Report Posted September 18, 2010 hi, yeah my car just quietly turns off, doesnt feel or sound like a stall. i live on a hill and so i could only test it on a hill, couldnt get the car to a flat area. Stupid question... does the crank pulley sit behind the carby? ill try that thanks. Ive tried to start the car with the clutch in and ive tried with the clutch out in N. I always used to start my car with the clutch in, I'm not sure if its better to start a car in N but thats the way ive always done it. Perhaps ive flooded the engine with petrol, whenever it didnt start id always try to give the gas a little pump to get the car to start, maybe i tried too hard lol. Quote
rockcox Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 does the crank pulley sit behind the carby? Hey Jeremy, the crank pulley is the one on the front of the engine that all of the belts connect to. It's on the end of the crank. I think you need to learn a little bit about how an engine works. It makes all of these problems a little less mysterious and also helps you explain what is actually happening. When I said see if the crank pulley moves in and out when you step on the clutch, I'm trying to figure out if your engine is completely knackered internally. I have seen at least one 4k continue to run when it is destroyed inside. Good luck...... Quote
jono1986 Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 Do these have a fuel cut-off solenoid? Oh and if someone said your alternator could be better, i'd start with that....start eliminating things that you know that aren't working properly. Just remember it takes "electricity" to start the the car and keep it running, check resistances all over the place aswell i.e. between the battery and the positive side of the coil. Also i think you should post help in your area section if your having trouble recognising parts on the engine. Another 2 cents from Jono. Quote
Jeremys_online Posted September 18, 2010 Author Report Posted September 18, 2010 ah yes, i did some research and found out where it is lol, I'm tryin to learn a bit more about my engine. Thanks for your help, ill take a walk down to my car now and see if its doing what you say might be the problem. Quote
Jeremys_online Posted September 18, 2010 Author Report Posted September 18, 2010 Thanks for your advise Jono, ive got a spare alternator so when i bring my ke to the mechanic ill get him to hook it up too. Quote
altezzaclub Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 Do these have a fuel cut-off solenoid? Yes they do, and that will be another thing to look at for the idle jeremy... It is a little electrical solenoid on the side of the carb with one wire going to it through a junction. Without ignition power it shuts the fuel off at idle, so if you knock the wire off it won't idle at all. Quote
jono1986 Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 Were all K series cars fitted with this solenoid? Quote
altezzaclub Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 I doubt it Jono, I'd expect the later ones only. Rob has a KE55 carb w/o one, my KE70 had one. Quote
