So last night I didn't really feel comfortable going to sleep knowing that someone had already broken into the car so while is was laying there I began thinking of how I could make a stealth car monitor on the cheap and came up with this which requires:

1x wireless door bell (can get them that work at a decent range).

1x relay.

Batteries for the remote and receiver.

Now I have not done this as yet but am assuming that it 'will' work.

Installation:

1. Locate the earth trigger for the interior light (make sure all doors trigger it) and run a wire to the area the remote relay will be placed.

2. Connect the door trigger earth to pin 85 of the relay.

3. Run a constant power supply to the 86 pin of the relay.

4. Pull apart the remote and remove the switch so you can solder 2 wires into the board instead.

5. Run one wire from the remote board to the 30 pin of the relay and the other wire to the 87 pin.

6. Fit batteries into the remote and hide relay and remote under the dash but make them accessible.

7. Put batteries in receiver and turn it on, now open the door and the chime 'should' go off.

Result:

Now all you have to do is turn the receiver on and sit it next to you and you now have a car that has no flashing light on the dash, no siren to scare the thieves but will know when someone opens your car door up and hopefully when you run outside to put a 9 iron around their head they will be still in the car for you to get them.

I've thought about hooking up an alarm siren (which you can buy seperatly from like jaycar or dicksmith) up to the door signal and place the siren inside the car and have a secret switch somewhere so you can turn it off obviously before you opening the door. Or for 33 bucks you can use one of these http://www.jaycar.com.au/productResults.asp?keywords=kj-8062&keyform=KEYWORD&SUBMIT.x=0&SUBMIT.y=0 .

Yeah but then all you have done is scared the intruders and woken the neighbours.

Isn't that what you want when someone tries to break into your car?

No, read the bottom of the first post.

I want to catch the pricks so them being none the wiser about notifying me of the break in they can be sitting in the car and I can run out and catch them.

All Trev wants to do is use his new 9 iron :P

Well the number one way to reduce car theft and stealing is to catch them, scaring them off just makes them go for another car.

Prevention is the key to any crime.....doesn't stop someone smashing the window next time and stealing that 900 dollar deck.

Oh and one door trigger is put to earth when any of the doors are opened.

Ok ok. calm down, just saying that having an alarm installed will prevent them from breaking in at all, How many times does it happen?

My mums car, about 3 times now.

My car, once.

An alarm will never prevent anyone breaking in or stealing a car, obviously have not heard of the latest thefts from Powercruise and the Monaro weekend where cars were stolen which had alarms fitted and activated.

Now what do you think the outcome would of been if the owners had been notified of the car being broken into?

To be honest i don't know how they stole that car, unless they had a spare BCM, the keys, or a towtruck. That cars probably been chopped up and sold now, but then again that car is said to be worth 110 grand........

I like the idea, the components are easy to get hold of and it transmits far enough.

You could have the light turn on a coil attached to the body, so 20,000volts go to earth through anyone touching the car.

If you get desperate...
