Mittz Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 hey, got a ke70 with a welded diff, king springs and monrow shockers... the rear end feels a bit loose at slow speeds around car parks and stuff and tends to tramp a fair bit on the inside wheel. i was wondering if a chunkyer sway bar would stiffen it all up a bit? and make the locker a bit smoother at slow speeds... any usefull advice, or options appreciated! cheers, Andrew Quote
SLW42 Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 Get a less stickier tire, heavier duty shock, or delete the locker, either that or learn what a locker will do dude, you realise a locker shags out your trailing arms and every bush in the rear end of your car, Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 Put an RA60 celica sway bar in, cheap and easy. Quote
Mittz Posted September 9, 2010 Author Report Posted September 9, 2010 well aware of what a locker will do cheers... is the celica sway bar a straight swap? Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 Yeah they are the same just thicker. There is a thread here on it. I can't be bothered finding it, I'm sure whoever posted it will pipe in soon. Quote
altezzaclub Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 (edited) Throw the stupid locker out and get something that was designed to work with the KE70 suspension. A stiffer sway will pick up the inside wheel more easily, but only at speeds where you have sufficient body roll to lift it up. So if you're going fast enough and turn sharply enough you should be able to go from terminal understeer to terminal oversteer in an instant. Nothing will make a welded diff smoother at slow speeds except---- A) Skinner tyres, so they are easier to scrub to bits. THAT's what a locker will do... scrub your tyres out when you turn. So the skinnier the better, say 125x13 at about 60psi. B) Keep using it- it will soon enough snap an axle and then the car will turn smoothly. C) A really high centre of gravity that allows massive body roll at carpark speeds so it picks up the inside wheel. It would pay to throw the springs out completely and run a rigid suspension to get a wheel to lift easily, or fit a gigantic rear sway bar that is stiffer than the springs and will easily pick up the inside wheel as the 300kg weight on the roof rolls the body. D) A diesel squirter fitted to the steering so it squirts oil on the inside wheel as you turn. Plans are on here somewhere, using windscreen washer motors as I remember. E) Throw out the Monroes and get shocks that have non-existant bump and incredible stiff rebound. That will allow the outside to sink easily and the inside to refuse to lift off the diff, so will promote one-wheeling too. I saw that thread about school holidays too.... Hiro Protagonist Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 sarcasm not appreciated. Did you expect anything less when you said that you're running a Cig-locker in a street car and want to make it handle better in carparks? Quote
ke70dave Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 (edited) Did you expect anything less when you said that you're running a Cig-locker in a street car and want to make it handle better in carparks? haha damn thats what i was going to post. the smaller your turning radius, the greater the problem with lockers, as you are experiencing. and to be honest there is not alot you can do. anything you do that will increase your handling will in fact make the effect of your locker worse. since handling mods are designed to hold the wheels firmer to the ground, and your currently problem is that you have TOO MUCH grip in the rear end, and thus the locker is causing you dramas. sarcasm or not mr altessas suggestions are completely correct, all those things will help your cause. take out the your sway bar, put softer springs and shocks in, raise your car, fit skinny tyres, crank the pressure in them. then you will feel less effect from your locker, since your rear end will have no grip at all and the inside wheel can spin/scrub as much as it wants. but your car will handle like poo at speed. you can either have your car driveable in carparks, and aweful at speed. or handle well at speed, and undriveable in car parks. which one would you rather;) Edited September 9, 2010 by ke70dave Quote
silverra23 Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 This thread is hilarious... you have a locker and are worried about the inside wheel tramping at car park speeds? There is only one genuine solution. F*ck off the locker. Quote
Grand Master of Awesome Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooool Quote
towe001 Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 welded diff <snipe> and tends to tramp a fair bit on the inside wheel. Maybe mod the arms for some anti-tramp. Its either increase the length of the bottom arm or change the location of where the top arm bolts to the car body and move it up. Can't remember which one. Either that or drive it in the wet and you wouldn't have to worry about those pesky tramps hanging around as much. ;) Quote
SLW42 Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 So what did you think that a locker wasn't gonna tramp?? ;) i love it when cars with locked diffs drive past, most of my cars have been either minispooled or welded lockers, the only time i ever had more tramp then when it should have, was when the trailing arm bushes were rooted in my falcon from the minispool, so change them and see how it goes, also if it's been dumped on the ground get a adj. Panhard rod too Quote
Mittz Posted September 11, 2010 Author Report Posted September 11, 2010 alright look, i didnt come here for abbuse. i know its possable to have a locker and turn full lock and the inside wheel will spin without the excess tramping! ive seen it plenty of times. all i wanted to know was if a stiffer sway bar would help! if you don't like lockers, thats not my problem, don't post. simple. as for the theory of softning the suspention, i don't think that would help... been thinking about it and i think that would cause more tramp I'm going to go ahead and find a celica sway bar and try it out... thanks to the one bloke who actualy offered an option for sway bars! 1 Quote
towe001 Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 I've got nothing against a locked diff (spool, detroit, soft lock) but there is a reason why their frowned upon by the law on the street. Personally i'd sooner go for either an air (or electric or, as in the case of some land cruisers cable) locker (which is approved) or an LSD. The only time i'd go for a spooled diff is in the front axle case of a part time 4wd. Quote
