greenmac80 Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 But you are a backyarder ;) yes and no.. i do paint all day almost every day though for my job... and i have NEVER used acrylic... i use basecoats and 2 packs. Quote
mr04ag Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 Acrylic is shit, full stop If you want a cheap back yard job on an old car, rub it with 180-240 dry, prime it, rub it again with 800 wet and use a cheap solid 2pack. If you get runs cut them flat with some 2000 wet and buff the spots back up. Or, rub your car and prime it yourself, then rub your primer and take it to the place near you that will paint it on a saturday for 500 bucks. There's one in most towns. Quote
TBR Posted September 9, 2010 Author Report Posted September 9, 2010 (edited) Acrylic is shit, full stop Why, "please explain" in best Pauline Hanson voice ;) Google : Acrylic vs 2 pack Edited September 9, 2010 by TBR Quote
greenmac80 Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 each paint system has thier merrits. to say one is shit full stop is wrong. on a side note acrylics can have small amounts of hardener added to increase the durability... Quote
Doogs Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 Disagree about acrylic being shit. It's simply a different system, used well it can acheive quite good results. Durability is the issue as others have said. I can beat all of that haha, about 20bucks and probably 10cans max i can make your car look good haha I will agree it will make your car "look", but diagree with the "good" part. No car mods repulse me quite as much as an "Aussie Export" hack matte black spray job. Some backyard jobs really look "backyardy" and thats a big reason why. Great results can be acheived at home with care and patience, but when you start with Aussie Export pressure packs your generally off to a bad start. /rant Quote

ke70dave Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 (edited) no but what does that matter... i work every day with the paint tech and directly discuss the various paints we use.. apprentice mean f all these days and her comments prove it. i think 'oh what a nissan' was having a dig at murd 55, since he is apparnently a real spray painters apprentice. i do love the "acrylic is sh*t" comments, with nothing to back it up. classic internet forum activity. isnt 2-pack illegal to spray with out fancy PPE and other equipment, and you have to run any extracted air from your booth through water and then dispose of the water properly? something like that....either way its nasty stuff, and i prolly wouldnt touch the stuff in my garage. though my mate did, and hes not dead yet. we'll see how he is in 30yrs:P also there was some mention of getting "runs" in the paint. when spraying we found it quite difficult to get runs, we tried painting on a few old panels first, and unless you held the gun completely still for a second, it was quite difficult to get a run, you just need to keep the gun moving and your sweet. and the paint was drying so damn fast anyway, i swear it was drying in the air before it even got to the car! Not digging at you man, i think we all know how to sweep floors and mask up, which is apparently all some REAL apprentices have been doing. I'm an electrician by the way, so yeah one of them 'backyarder' types. Quote
