ROSSOTOON Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 hi, the head gasket on my 4k has blown. iam looking to put extractors and maybe a better carbie on. i would just like to know what would be a better choice. 1. replace the gasket on the current motor or 2. look for another better 4k motor altogether, that may be a better base for modifying. does anyone have any ideas cheers ROSSOTOON Quote
ke70dave Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 best bet is to rip the head off, take it down to a machinist and get them to check it out. if its not warped or bent, you will only be up for the cost of a headgasket. ($100 or so perhaps) if its warped or bent, then you may be better off picking up another engine, or maybe just a new head. last time i got a 4k head reconditioned it was about $450. how is the rest of the engine, did it blow smoke or rattle? and how did the headgasket blow? overheating? blktoy35 Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 you can get a 4k for nothing these days but who knows what condition its in, there all old thrashed in most cases... if you know the history of your current motor, might be better off getting a hg full kit got mine for like $40 change the head gasket, as u tear it down other gasket like exhaust manifold, thermostat housing etc...will most likely crumble so the kit suppllies all of the gaskets... get the head pressure tested.. if its ok get it machined flat.. may cost between $100 to $150 i would change the thermostat and get the radiator flushed as well... altezzaclub Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 Have a think about the carby you would use, so you can sort out inlet manifold to head port matching. I had to port out the stock 4K to match the Lynx manifold for the twin SUs. If you have it all apart you will find it easier to assemble with the motor out anyway... and if you're putting on extractors and a carb you will need a cam grind to really make them work.... and so the list goes on! Were the rings and bearings fine before the head gasket went?? or is it worth new bearings and a hone while you have it apart? Have a skim thrught other people's builds for ideas and problems. What I did is all in here- http://www.rollaclub.com/board/index.php?showtopic=42407 Quote
