i think they have forgotten a certain mercedes 300sl or perhaps a jaguar e-type

no way is a corolla EVER going to be a sexy car:P

I get a semi looking at mine...

Nah seriously, I gave up on wheels after they road tested the w427 in a shootout with some ridiculous 6.3 litre supercharged merc saloon worth 3 times the price. Get in touch with reality wankers.

Imagine the old guy who got fired from Aussie Top Gear, thats the kind of self loving baby boomer wanker that reads wheels.

There are three main types of comparisons that car magazines can make - comparison on equal price, comparison on equal spec, and comparison on equal purpose.

Here's an example of each:

1) Equal price - two hatchbacks, both cost $20,000. The comparison shows that hatch A gives you more space, whilst hatch B gives you more power. Handy for people shopping to a budget and want the best X that Y can buy

2) Equal spec - the base model of each of the two local large sedans in identical spec (airbags, air-con, alloys etc). Large sedan A costs $2000 less, so if you're after a large sedan with X features, then sedan A is the winner for being cheaper

3) Equal purpose - two executive express sedans from different manufacturers but appealing to the one market demographic - the cashed-up real-estate agent who likes to ferry his customers around in comfort but wants something grunty and showy under the bonnet. Sports sedan A offers 90% of the performance of sports sedan B for 60% of the price, so if you're after bang-for-your-buck then it is the winner. But if the agent wanted the brand-snobbery and badge-appeal of sports sedan B, then it is the only "logical" choice (but the fact that it is biased due to the badge regardless of the quality of the product defies logic)

The W427-E63 comparo falls into comparison 3 - equal purpose. Thus the issue of price/bang-for-your-buck is significant. The fact that it is an Aussie-made sedan showing up the significantly more expensive German opposition is just an added bonus (and one I think they do make use too often).

For an equivalent that might not grind people's gears as much, think about the original purpose of Lexus - the LS400 was released to be just as good as the S-class and 7-series but for 2/3rds the price. It showed just how much you pay for the car and how much you pay for the Roundel or 3-pointed star
