71-BEETLE Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 Hi, I'm about to purchase a KE55. It has a stock diff, i want to get a locked diff. Where should i start looking for one, and a rough price. I can put the new one in, but i am NOT WELDING THE DIFF. Probably another noob question but what is the stud pattern of a KE55. Cheers Quote
Evan G Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 why do you want a locked diff? let me guess cause your drift king correct? Quote
71-BEETLE Posted August 19, 2010 Author Report Posted August 19, 2010 Nope, not that clever. I'm trying to set up a car to learn to drift in, at a track, not on the street. And this mod is one of the first in which i have been told will be helpful. It is also one of the ones i feel confident doing. Quote
ke70dave Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 first result from a google search of "ke55 studd pattern" http://www.rollaclub.com/board/index.php?showtopic=15077 and as for locked diff, no idea, but id advise against it. Quote
19914afc Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 no one unless you know them or aren't very dodgy will "sell" you a locked diff, and if you do drive with one you'd better be a dam good drive in the wet. They are just dangerous and dodgy. Quote
71-BEETLE Posted August 19, 2010 Author Report Posted August 19, 2010 (edited) Yeah this car will maily be a track car. Only driven on the street if i need to test something out etc, not gunna be a daily or weekender. What would you suggest if i wanted to drive it to the track etc i would need to do. Whats this gunna cost roughly too? Edited August 19, 2010 by 71-BEETLE Quote
19914afc Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 don't drive it to the track, drive it on a trailer. As you say it will be a track car it will most likely be unroadworthy. Quote
toyota_ae71 Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 Take the current centre out and ask someone to weld it for you, if your not a confident welder. Itd be alot easier then trying to buy one. Also if your intending to use it for a drift rig, don't try sliding it on bitchi until you have stiffer rear leafs and stiffer front springs or you'l just be king of understeer. Quote
philbey Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 Do you want a lock diff without having it welded? The alternative to welding is to use a minispool and I'm pretty sure nobody has bothered to make one up for spindly little corolla diffs. Quote
eiriksmil Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 I have no experience with KE55s.. However, if the axle is similar to those found on KE70s, or if you can modify a KE70 axle to fit, you can get a 100% progressive locking TRD diff for an AE86, or a stock AE86 diff which as far as I remember has got atleast some locking. Having say a 40% locked diff or a progressive locking one (expensive) is great for sliding about. What sort of engine will you be going with? If you've got a stock 3 or 4K, or hell even a 2T, you don't even have to THINK about the diff until you've got more power. Quote
SLW42 Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 (edited) To learn how to drift you have started with the wrong car, leaf sprung rear ends tend to get what we call axle tramp and axle tramp is bad in drifting, start with a ke70/1 or ae71 they are coilsprung rear end and with a decent shock and spring they wont axle tramp, plus they have a steering rack instead of a steering box, i know for a fact you can get KAAZ 2way lsd's for a stock ke70 diff (thats right KAAZ makes a 2 way for a ke70), it is dangerous to drive with a locked/spooled diff in the wet, but i have done it ever since i have owned a rwd corolla, anyways point is you started with the wrong car, why do you think there are so many ke70's out there drifting? Cause there the better setup car from factory Edited August 20, 2010 by SLW42 Quote
RainWarriorDregs Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 details on KAAZ 2way for an 8 bold borgwarner please. i'm calling shenanigans. Quote

Grand Master of Awesome Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 on the Kazz site there's only options for an ae86 does this mean S series diffs? as I'm under the impression thats what usdm ae86's have? http://www.kaazonline.com/corolla.html also ive heard people talking about a minispool being able to be ordered from repco? Quote
ke70dave Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 the aftermarket diff available for ae86 diff is for a T series. there are 2 types of ae86 T series (big and small axel, and these only came in jap cars, dunno about US), then there is the T series out of the T18 which have the smaller axel. (btw big axel is like 25.4, small is 24.5 or something, not much in it) the aus delivered ae86s have the S series, which is useless. still waiting to hear back from mr SLW about this rumoured KAAZ for a ke70 diff.
