Hey guys, manual conversion is getting closer on red, but removal of the heater core is part of this task. I need advice on how to remove the original hoses without breaking the metal fittings to the core and tap and in addition the heater hoses themselves. Returning after a drive I sprayed all around the fittings making sure it soaked right through to the rubber. I thought this may assist in some way after a few sprays as it would free the stuck on hoses.

I'd rather try and remove them properly before forking out dollars to Toyota buying a pair of hoses.

Thanks in advance.

not really sure what your asking,

the hoses arent special, just *whatever size it is* (1/2"?) heater hose, cheap as from supercheap.

if it doesnt come off with good pull, or twist it on the fitting to break the seal, else slice it with a knife.

don't pull too hard asthe fittings are only copper, and if they are coroded they will bend/crack easy.

nice looking engine bay btw.

Use a seal pick between the hose and the pipe to break the seal, once you get one side off you can normally twist the hose to break the other seal.

Hey Trev,

I'm trying to visualise what this seal pick would look like. Recently I saw a twisted coathanger wire used as a hook in trying to remove the hose but it didnt work as planned.

They work as it breaks away the rust/corrosion and dried coolant seal between the pipe and hose.

If I am reusing the hose I do it that way, if I am replacing the hose I will use multi grips or vice grips on the hose to twist it.

If it was me doing it i would slice the hose with a blade as the hoses are much cheaper to replace then if u break the heater core. That what we do at work. The hoses arent that expensive.

You know that AE71 hoses aren't easy to get, gates do not list them and I don't know if Toyota still has them, this is why mine never had any.

CMI toyota in adelaide had some last as we replaced some on a customers car from memory they were about 16$ each but not 100% on price and that was our trade discount.

Trev is right in a sence, gates do not manufacture them. I went to a Toyota parts shop in Heidelberg yesterday and shown which hoses I wanted and I was quoted $80 and $60 per hose. Trade discount would be nice. :D Trex thanks for seal picks link too.

Neatness. Some people like the moulded OEM design, don't have to worry about getting right length and all the bends are in the right places rather than having to try and bend generic hose into the right shape (and then it won't hold it and just arch instead)
