andys-corolla Posted August 3, 2010 Report Posted August 3, 2010 hi i jus bought a toyota corolla 1987 ae 80 and the back brake locks on it own when i use the hand brak can people tell me whats wrong and how to fix it Quote
Twinky Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 Firstly go back to school and re-learn spelling & grammar. Now, from your question it sounds like you are saying when you apply the hand brake the rear wheels lock up. This is doing exactly what it is ment to do, the hand brake stops your car from rolling away when you park it. If you do not like this factory option simply slide under the car with a pair of bolt cutters and snip the handbrake cable. Hey presto no rear locking!!! You can now safely let you car roll down the hill into a stobie pole. Woot! Quote
andys-corolla Posted August 4, 2010 Author Report Posted August 4, 2010 it still locked when i put the hand brake down but it only the bac left side that does it and sometimes it locks when i brake could it be something to do with the drums on the back or not? At the moment i leaving it gear so it don't roll is that bad aswell? also sorry if my spelling is bad Quote
Twinky Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 Now you are making more sense. If I were you I would check the drums and the handbrake mechanism. I have a disc rear end so it is a little different to yours, I can't really answer your question properly. There is not a hell of alot of work to take it off so if you have a free afternoon you should be able to take it all apart and see what it is doing. If it is a cable setup for the handbrake check to see that it is not loose and tighten up the bolts. Quote
andys-corolla Posted August 4, 2010 Author Report Posted August 4, 2010 yeah i will and thanks for the help i will check it on the weekend since i doing tafe till 5pm and it starts getting dark round that time. also would it be worth puttin discs on the back or not because i want to gets mags but i think the drums like silly ? Twinky Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 If you can find a twincam model from the wreckers then you can pretty mutch swap over the entire setup. If you do not drive fast then don't bother, just spray the drums black and it will look ok. Quote
SLW42 Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 Adjusting the handbrake off abit would be the 1st thing i'd be doing bud look at the back of the drum, there will be a slot in the drum and if you look inside that there should be an adjuster on there figure out which way is off and bobs your uncle Quote
Trev Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 Sounds like the wheel cylinder is leaking and making the drum stick disabling it to return properly, take it off and give it a clean and an adjustment if need be. Quote
