Adelaide

Hey guys.

 

Haven't posted on RC in a while, but knew there are a lot of guys from SA on here so thought I'd ask... what's Adelaide like? I landed a graduate job over there and will be moving (I'm guessing somewhere in the city) in February. I'm curious to know how it compares to Perth, pros and cons etc. I've heard many peoples opinions who are in Perth but would like to know about it from people who live there.

never been to perth but A guy at work whos lived both there and here has said Adelaide's alot like perth, but less import cars (silvias, skylines etc) more cops, and more commo's/falcons lol.

 

i'd say its pretty relaxed around here, even at the busy times the citys still not too bad, easy to get around with free city loop buses and terrace to terrace trams. its pretty small compared to most Australian capitals, so its hard to get lost. the main "centre" of the cbd is rundle mall with they're 700 odd shops or something. for nightlife there are pubs in almost every suburb, few clubs scattered in the city, and the casino is right next to the train station. the biggest street on fridays and saturdays is hindley street as it's lined with clubs and bars, couple of gentlemens clubs along there too. i suppose with it being the central area thats why it has a bad rep, you want to watch your back once it gets past 1-2am. theres a constant stream of cops so most issues get resolved pretty quick. during the day though its completely different, hindley is like any other place, shops here and there, no one trying to start anything.

 

i've grown up around the blackwood/belair area, which is about 10km south of the cbd just in the foothills. ive found the area to be great, there's plenty of shops for convenience, but not too many so its still has that relaxed suburbs feel. close to beaches, about 15km. close to cinemas, and good hills lookouts and country areas.

 

when your locating watch out for like elizabeth area if your going up north, and i spose christies beach down south, they don't have the best rep. personally i prefer southern suburbs, i suppose because theyre closer and i know people who live down south.

 

western suburbs and especially north west are the 'richer' areas. eastern areas are... well i've never really heard anything interesting that goes on in the eastern suburbs, so i suppose they'd be alright.

 

make sure you stack up the cash during the year, because once christmas hits its about 2 months of non stop music festivals, bathurst, big name concerts, womadelaide, the fringe etc. then it ticks over to april/may its dead. so if you havent planned ahead, be prepared to be in debt, or miss out on all the fun :) haha

 

suppose thats all i can really think of saying, what sort of stuff did you wanna know about adelaide? did you know we have to big shiny balls that are touching?? it cost $40,000 to remove them and clean/polish them the other year. probably our biggest tourist attraction, lol. apart from our winerys :)

Mate, as long as you roll in with the right attitude you'll always have fun wherever you live. There's plenty of stuff to do, people to meet and nice places to live and exist. After living in Melbourne for 7 years I found that moving back to adelaide, you need to look a bit harder for the fun and excitement, and you're not spoilt for choice like melbourne, but it's all there.

 

I'm from Blackwood way like Dropz and honestly, I love the place. Foothills, trees, windy roads. Best spot in the world.

 

Give us some more info? Who you working for, what industry, where's your office?

 

What stuff you like doing other than mopping up corolla oil leaks? Music tastes, hobbies, sports etc?

 

Also, steer clear of people who live in croydon, they'll distract you with their heavy metally music and while you're not looking they'll steal the shoes off your feet.

Adelaide has nothing on Perth, you have the Left Bank and the Cott for a Sunday session, we don't and we don't have the people which go on such afternoons if you know what i mean :)

But as has been said prior, people are pretty relaxed, not quite as relaxed as Perth folk, but very much the same

Wow great reply - thanks for taking the time to write all that. :D I don't know where I'll be staying yet as I'm yet to find out where the office is. I don't really go to many festivals so that stuff isn't a problem haha.

Thanks Raven! I love the old Corollas and was thinking that since SA seems to sport more of them than any other state that I might purchase another KE70 when I'm earning more and do the things I've always wanted to do to it. ;) That or an old BMW. :D

I'm not really into clubs, festivals and stuff - more of a nerd than anything - but still into street bikes, cars, gaming, programming... sports I enjoy tennis, golf and kicking the footy around occasionally.

 

I'll be working for the Department of Human Services as a Technical Programmer - as for the actual agency (e.g. health, Centrelink) I don't know yet haha. I am still waiting for the offer package which will tell me all of that, as well as the office location.

 

I've seen a few photos of Adelaide hills from photos of peoples' cars here on Rollaclub and it looks awesome... if I could live in the hills that would be sweet, but I think I'll be renting some studio apartment in the city... dunno yet haha.

Again, I don't really go out drinking and shit, maybe the friends I make over there will so I will end up doing it too.. who knows. ;)

If you're getting into Adelaide in Feb and staying in the CBD then you can have the best time ever! Right in the middle of Fringe. City is buzzing every single night in the East End and full of tourists and entertainment. Adelaide CBD also has some of the finest dining you will find in this country. One thing we do well here is food. Also you don't have to be a club or pub person....... there are wine bars and other styles of venues for getting together with friends for a drink (by drink I mean alcoholic or coffee or milkshake). I seem to meet a lot of international people here for varying lengths of time on holidays or student visas etc. Many of them come here by themselves and soon make friends and enjoy our lifestyle. One thing I hear a lot is how good our restaurants are and how spoiled for choice we are in such a small area like our CBD. We also have cool places to grab a coffee after wherever you choose to dine. Places like Elephant Walk or Spatz for example.

 

Seriously, if you are staying in the CBD then stay there as long as you can. In Adelaide thats where everything happens. There are many great restaurants outside the CBD as well.... but not much else as far as nightly things to do. February, March and April are the greatest 3 months on our calendar in my opinion, so you are getting here at the right time.

Adelaide drivers are friggin champions in comparison to Perth faaarktards on the roads. (i can't realistically call what they do driving... more a fortuitous, disorganised flailing of hands and pedals that, through some great chance and mystery to myself, manages NOT to kill them and everyone around them...)

 

And the roads up in the hills... mmmm. wish we had some of that here in the west.

Bumping this thread so I can get opinions on good suburbs to live in SA that are close to the CBD as that's where I'll be working. I'll be looking for a cheapish 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 1 garage place to rent. If anyone knows of nice suburbs close to the CBD, please post 'em up!
