Trev Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 Hey, Anyone in the Bris area got a set of Toyota lifting hooks I can borrow as I dunno what I have done with mine, If I can't borrow any then I will have to scrounge the wreckers to try to find some. Quote
TE278U Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 use a longer bolt out on the exhaust side instead, and possibly the same on the opposite side if you have no luck. if you're using chain, you can put the bolt through a link for security. Quote
Trev Posted July 20, 2010 Author Report Posted July 20, 2010 I prefer to use the hooks as they keep the load inwards and square to the head whereas bolts you are lifting by the thread and I don't trust 140 odd kg's with a small chunk of alloy. Quote
Trev Posted July 21, 2010 Author Report Posted July 21, 2010 Went to the wreckers and got 2 hooks and a heater core hose for nothing so I am all good and no I didn't steal them I know the guy at the counter so he said just take them. Quote
TE278U Posted July 21, 2010 Report Posted July 21, 2010 lol, you don't want to see what we lift with small pieces of alloy at my shed then... Quote
ke70dave Posted July 23, 2010 Report Posted July 23, 2010 i remember lifting an engine using telecom rope once. casualty: one steering rack case. Quote
Trev Posted July 23, 2010 Author Report Posted July 23, 2010 (edited) i remember lifting an engine using telecom rope once. casualty: one steering rack case. camerondownunder88 and I removed his 4k via bike tie downs, I lifted the motor and he pulled the strap until it was high enough, back in the days :) Edited July 23, 2010 by Trev Quote
Twinky Posted July 23, 2010 Report Posted July 23, 2010 You'd be surprised at the tensile strength of steel. A 3mm stanless steel M3 screw can stand 100g of tension. And exhause bolt could be more than capable of holding the engine up as I have used them any times when hooks are unavailable. Although the hooks make life sooooo mutch easier. Quote
Trev Posted July 23, 2010 Author Report Posted July 23, 2010 Seems that you guys must be unaware of the 4age lifting hook spots so here are some pics... (where the bolts are) Quote
cuzzo Posted July 23, 2010 Report Posted July 23, 2010 Yep and on my engine the previous owner decided the alloy section was to heavy and removed it by the methods suggested. Quote
ke70dave Posted July 23, 2010 Report Posted July 23, 2010 ah yes close, that last few times ive taken/put in a 4age ive wrapped packing straps (the ones with the metal ratchet, you use for trailers) around the block and through the intake/exhaust manifolds. not ideal, but it does give you the advantage of being able to monouver the engine around a fair bit when its in the air (or close to engine mounts) also to the ideas of using a bolt, your not really supposed to put any weight in shear on the threaded part of the bolt. but ive no doubt it works well anyway, since 4ages really arent that heavy to begin with. B.L.Z.BUB Posted July 23, 2010 Report Posted July 23, 2010 Rope, a long metal pipe and 4 dudes. And beer.:) Quote
Trev Posted July 23, 2010 Author Report Posted July 23, 2010 (edited) When you put a bolt in the lifting location the pulling force is pulling upwards and this could break the aluminium away whereas the force applied using the lifting hooks bolted securely to the mounts is an out wards force as if you are trying to pull the bolt out of the hole. I know what way I prefer. Edited July 23, 2010 by Trev Quote
TE278U Posted July 23, 2010 Report Posted July 23, 2010 if you tightened the bolt through a link of chain, you would achieve the same result  Quote
Silver Styler Posted July 26, 2010 Report Posted July 26, 2010 I have some on my 4age thats sitting at mine if you need them still? Quote
