capt. crunch Posted July 8, 2010 Report Posted July 8, 2010 hey its about time someone reposts for the milionth time now and ask all the noobie questions!! but at least i think mine are a bit more specific as ive read the first 5 pages of threads. ok so i picked up a ae71 recently and want to start playing around with it. it is a stock 4age and i bought it with a pod attached and a press bent 2inch exhaust, the rest of the car is stock from what i was told. So first things first I will be relocating the filter so its not so close to engine and closer to a cold air supply. I will be doing oil change to synthetics this w/e and in perth would 10 -40 be good all year round? any brand suggestions? my upgrades will generally be one at a time and a few months spaced apart. in regards to the rest of the car being stock, i am wondering would it be more beneficial to first replace the diff with a T series w. LSD or can i just replace the cams first? I can source a Diff and LSD kit for around 700 is that a reasonable price for it? I'm not too sure as i'm not really up to date with pricing in regards to parts. With the cams, what is the key differences and what would be more beneficial? 256 or 264 durations, for road use and maybe the odd track day for fun? Where does the peak float around in the rev ranges for each, can the stock springs and ECU run both of these (8.1mm lift being the biggest)? I read that the stock ECU can still handle the 264 but didnt see anything about the valve springs? What is the factory ECU rev limited to on the TVIS bigports? 75 or 7800? can this limiter be removed easily? What shops in Aus/ Perth is good for 4ag parts? where can i get piggy back ECU or full stand alones etc? I looked around on google but couldn't find many useful websites... sorry for the massive noob questions here but i been searching for a while now and found some useful info but just needed some specifics and this would be my first official 'project car' Quote
capt. crunch Posted July 8, 2010 Author Report Posted July 8, 2010 Oh and in regards to cams i just basically want to know what rev range the power sits in between the two, how drivable they are on the street etc. Quote
sam2306 Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 maybe think about some better suspension before you go modifying the engine, for starters get some ae86 struts and brakes, either in coilover form or used stiffer lowered springs, than some better shocks and springs for the rear and maybe swaybars depends what you want to use the car for Quote
capt. crunch Posted July 9, 2010 Author Report Posted July 9, 2010 good call, i have driven it for a while now though and for stock suspension it felt pretty good so i thought that could wait a while, but if i must a start would be stiffer slightly lower springs then shocks afterwards? I can't really be arsed trying to do a coil over conversion on it or are they basically a bolt in mod for these shells? once again pardon the ignorance but i know FA about AE71s and what works/ doesnt, mainly been reading up on the engine and still have heaps of reading to do on the shells. I'm just trying to organise a structured plan to work with, so i can list in order what needs to be done. so lets say after the suspension what would be the first place to start? I have worked on and fixed a fair few engines / cars before but i never did a upgrade project like this before so its all pretty confusing. I'm still creepin through the forums for info but any suggestions are welcome. Quote

Shornesheep Posted July 17, 2010 Report Posted July 17, 2010 Having been in this arena for a long time the suggestion about suspension is the good one you can make a car go fast in a straight line but if it does not corner it's a drag car you want to enjoy driving not sit and wonder if yu are aking a corner too fast I suggest oversize sway bars nylothane bushes a decent set of shocks and springs add to that about 1.5 degree of neg camber and you will have a ball :) Quote
capt. crunch Posted July 18, 2010 Author Report Posted July 18, 2010 any suggestions in brands of springs / shocks to use? i see alot of people go for 8kg front 6 rear for the spring rates but read somewhere that a set up like this is quite harsh on your car's body? Quote
