jackbyo Posted June 25, 2010 Report Posted June 25, 2010 Okay so i dropped my loverly hard top ke55 to my closest mechanic to get a blue slip, as it's been unregistered since 2008. They seem like decent dudes. the guy who does the blue slip has told me that he'll make me up a list of a few things I need to take care of (couple rust spots, a reverse light, etc) but he also mentioned that the pitman arm is worn and needs replacing. Now, he does know that I just wanna get the list off him and try to get everything done myself, but I'm worried about this pitman arm thing because i'm thinking it might be a mechanic only kinda job... is that right or is it one for me to learn? also if I need to track down this part, can i just get the pitman arm off any other 4k engine?? thanks Quote
Taz_Rx Posted June 25, 2010 Report Posted June 25, 2010 Pitman arm is part of the steering, nothing to do with the engine. You could get one off another car, but being the same age its highly likely to be just as rooted. Just get a new one, they're not overly expensive. Somewhere like pedders should be able to get you one. If you haven't got a whole lot of mechanical experience then I'd say leave it for a mechanic. Quote
philbey Posted June 25, 2010 Report Posted June 25, 2010 Yeh replacing a pitman arm is likely to be more difficult than it first appears. You'll need the steering box out and then a decent puller to get it off the shaft. It's probably a tapered spline....! Quote

But you will need the car up on stands so that you can have the room to get under it and use a "Pitman Arm Puller". If you get in quick to a tool shop that sells "SP Tools" ask for SP67030 Pitman Arm Puller, $6.00 till the end of june. (http://www.austechindustries.com.au/). But, before you pull the old arm off, make sure you mark the shaft some how so that when you put the new arm on its centered in the same spot as where the old one was. Quote
jackbyo Posted June 26, 2010 Author Report Posted June 26, 2010 (edited) i think this might be one for the mechanic to do... he said he'd be able to do it for under $100 if i track down the part. burson's said they can get me a new aftermarket one for $60... sounds pretty alright deal to me edit:repco will get the part for $40 ! Another thing written on the little list is that i need to find a rear center seat belt... i was under the impression that this car (ke55 2 door) was made to seat 4 only? That should be noted on your compliance plate. My ke70 is only a 4 seater. Quote
rob83ke70 Posted June 26, 2010 Report Posted June 26, 2010 all ke corollas are only four seaters and it should say so on the compliance plate. Quote

So all up you'd be looking at something close to, or over, the $150 mark to swap in a new steering arm.... Hmm, when i got my '30 it was rego'd as a five seater till i had the rego swapped over and the inspector didn't like the idea of it, since it was only complianced as a four and only had the belts to sit four.. I got a ke30 rego'd a few months back, and They insisted on the 5th belt, I got sick of arguing with them about as once again the compliance plate said 4 seater, so I just chucked on in from a commodore. towe001 Posted June 27, 2010 Report Posted June 27, 2010 It was the same thing with my dads old '55. Only four belts but it was rego'd as a five so he found some lap sash belts. Bloody hard on the arse if you sat in the middle on the trans tunnel. Might be half the reason why my tail bone is broken...... Quote
rob83ke70 Posted June 27, 2010 Report Posted June 27, 2010 bugger that. it was originally a 4 seater and somebody made a mistake and rego'd it as a 5 seater. I'm told (and have seen first hand) its bloody hard not to make a mistake with blue slips as the rta give you dodgy information to begin with but I'd kick up a stink until they registered it properly. our ke55 is a ke35 according to the rta (i wish!) and I'm not too stressed about that, but something like seatbelts and having to make it not original to pass a rego..... I'd ring the rta and talk to them, if they didn't help and the mechanic insisted on it having 5 seatbelts I'd get a letter from toyota and ring the rta again and make a pain the arse of myself until it was done right.
