Hey guys.

I have a 5k engine with twin webbers and my car has dropped all the oil ;) the car still starts fine... but what could this be? i hope its nothing to bad, i had just finished everything that needed to be done for getting a RWC and now its broken

does anyone know what may have caused the oil just dumping everywhere? I'm going to go home and check to see if the sump plug decided to run away and not come home

Timing seals when they're clapped out can dump a bunch of oil, especially after shutdown when the hot oil comes running back out the galleries.

Maybe even check simple things like oil filter, oil pressure sender etc to make sure nothing there has failed, but my money would be on a seal.

Also, sump gaskets can be tricky to get to seal.

oh I'm not dirving it just started it to see if it would still start and then stopped it again... hmmmm i might just take it to a mechanic and see what they say... and I'm dead broke ARGH!!!

Sump gasket is a dog!!!

It shouldn't suddenly dump all the oil through a seal, so the most likely is no sump plug or a hole in the sump.

Go lie under it and see.

If its a seal just put oil in and drive it.... it will probably take a week or two to lose it.

the oil dumped pretty quickly so maybe it isnt a seal? I'm hoping its just the sump plug... but if it is a hole in the sump I'm guessing i need to get a new sump or does the whole engine have to be replaced?

Ah the good old fatigued and crack brass fitting.

Unplug the senders in the second pick and take the whole lot to somewhere like enzed, hydriquip etc. They'll then give you a new T-piece..... prefferably in stainless steel so it won't crack again.

oh k sweeet thanks for that Simon

how will i get the brass bit out of the other part? just drill it out?

nah don't drill it while its on the engine!

you will fill your engine with brass filings!

you may be able to gently tap it out, by using something sharp and hitting it around the edge. and unscrewing it slowly. I'm not sure how tight its going to be, since its a tapered thread it may be quite tight...

if that doesnt work you can to take that whole fitting off (take off the oil filter too) and then attack it with something to try and unscrew it on the work bench etc. maybe one of those easy out things.

Yeah I'd be more inclined to remove the oil filter mount from the motor to try and remove it, then you don't have to worry about the brass filings Dave mentioned. It really doesn't matter how you get it out in that case. An "easy-out" would most likely work.

Consider this a flaming rob haha.

That brass fitting looks like the standard VDO oil pressure sender T Piece. Interesting, I have the same item due to be fitted, am having second thoughts about it though!!

Ezy outs will get that out no worries, take the whole oil filter mount off as mentioned and do it on the bench.

That oil would have been spraying EVERYWHERE! ouch.
