jaygore Posted June 21, 2010 Report Posted June 21, 2010 Hey guys. I have a 5k engine with twin webbers and my car has dropped all the oil ;) the car still starts fine... but what could this be? i hope its nothing to bad, i had just finished everything that needed to be done for getting a RWC and now its broken  does anyone know what may have caused the oil just dumping everywhere? I'm going to go home and check to see if the sump plug decided to run away and not come home Quote
Twinky Posted June 21, 2010 Report Posted June 21, 2010 Try to find out where the leak is coming from first. I wouldn't be starting the car with no oil.... Quote
philbey Posted June 21, 2010 Report Posted June 21, 2010 Timing seals when they're clapped out can dump a bunch of oil, especially after shutdown when the hot oil comes running back out the galleries. Maybe even check simple things like oil filter, oil pressure sender etc to make sure nothing there has failed, but my money would be on a seal. Also, sump gaskets can be tricky to get to seal. Quote
jaygore Posted June 21, 2010 Author Report Posted June 21, 2010 oh I'm not dirving it just started it to see if it would still start and then stopped it again... hmmmm i might just take it to a mechanic and see what they say... and I'm dead broke ARGH!!! Quote
altezzaclub Posted June 21, 2010 Report Posted June 21, 2010 (edited) Sump gasket is a dog!!! It shouldn't suddenly dump all the oil through a seal, so the most likely is no sump plug or a hole in the sump. Go lie under it and see. If its a seal just put oil in and drive it.... it will probably take a week or two to lose it. Edited June 21, 2010 by altezzaclub Quote
jaygore Posted June 21, 2010 Author Report Posted June 21, 2010 the oil dumped pretty quickly so maybe it isnt a seal? I'm hoping its just the sump plug... but if it is a hole in the sump I'm guessing i need to get a new sump or does the whole engine have to be replaced? Quote
madKE35coupe Posted June 21, 2010 Report Posted June 21, 2010 new or 2nd hand good nick sump would be fine id say. check the quality of the sump gasket while you are down there Quote
jaygore Posted June 21, 2010 Author Report Posted June 21, 2010 ok i shall even though i have no idea what I am doing when it comes to cars hahaha but my dad knows so might get him over to give me a hand Quote
jaygore Posted June 23, 2010 Author Report Posted June 23, 2010 I FOUND THE LEAK :D now I'm pretty sure its not to bad at all, i just have no idea what these 2 parts are called  so if someone could assist me that would be great, cos i can then call the wreckers to get another one :D here are the pictures Quote
Taz_Rx Posted June 23, 2010 Report Posted June 23, 2010 Ah the good old fatigued and crack brass fitting. Unplug the senders in the second pick and take the whole lot to somewhere like enzed, hydriquip etc. They'll then give you a new T-piece..... prefferably in stainless steel so it won't crack again. Quote
jaygore Posted June 23, 2010 Author Report Posted June 23, 2010 oh k sweeet thanks for that Simon how will i get the brass bit out of the other part? just drill it out? Quote
ke70dave Posted June 23, 2010 Report Posted June 23, 2010 oh k sweeet thanks for that Simon how will i get the brass bit out of the other part? just drill it out? nah don't drill it while its on the engine! you will fill your engine with brass filings! you may be able to gently tap it out, by using something sharp and hitting it around the edge. and unscrewing it slowly. I'm not sure how tight its going to be, since its a tapered thread it may be quite tight... if that doesnt work you can to take that whole fitting off (take off the oil filter too) and then attack it with something to try and unscrew it on the work bench etc. maybe one of those easy out things. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted June 23, 2010 Report Posted June 23, 2010 Yeah I'd be more inclined to remove the oil filter mount from the motor to try and remove it, then you don't have to worry about the brass filings Dave mentioned. It really doesn't matter how you get it out in that case. An "easy-out" would most likely work. Quote
corollaart Posted June 23, 2010 Report Posted June 23, 2010 Is it just my eyes or is that earth strap thru the t piece. If it is move it,if its not flame me. rob Quote
philbey Posted June 23, 2010 Report Posted June 23, 2010 Consider this a flaming rob haha. That brass fitting looks like the standard VDO oil pressure sender T Piece. Interesting, I have the same item due to be fitted, am having second thoughts about it though!! Ezy outs will get that out no worries, take the whole oil filter mount off as mentioned and do it on the bench. That oil would have been spraying EVERYWHERE! ouch. Quote
