wangtastic Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 Hello all  I recently decided that I might to lower my e12 a little bit to get the wheel arches nicely in line with the wheels and give my car a much better overall presence on the road. I am utterly confused.com by it all though to be honest with you! I understand that I need to buy lowering springs for my car and have already found a tonne of different ones online and quite like the look of some of the 35mm - 40mm ones (don't want to go craaaaaazy!) however my friend said that I may want to look and getting new shock absorbers too as the car will "inevitably bottom out and break the shocks". now I have no clue as to what I should be looking for here?! I've tried searching for shock/spring kits but unfortunately cannot find any! Am I going about the search all wrong? If I end up having to buy the shocks/springs separately which shocks can/do I get and where from? (I am UK based) My car is a 2002 1.4 'rolla sometimes listed as 2003 model on some websites. Pictures here: http://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?p...mp;id=508912143 any and all help will be greatly appreciated :( Cheers, Steve Quote
ke70dave Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 you may find it may be easier to give a suspension specialist a call, in australia we have either "pedders" or "fulcrum" that arent to bad. since you are in UK ive no idea what companies are over there, but a few phone calls should be able to answer most of your questions. they will have all the info for you as this is what they do every day. your mate is right about the shocks, but you may be able to get away with it if you don't lower it tooooo much (30-40mm isnt much) but you will find that if you get better shocks it will greatly improve the handling of the car, your shocks may be getting a bit sloppy (being ~8yrs old). madKE35coupe Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 another option is to go to an automotive based shop that sells suspension parts. we have super cheap auto and repco as the main ones here. all you need to do really is look up the specs on the car and find out which shock absorbers are made for the car, and which ones you can get, depending on how far you want to go. but being a late model car, i think your best bet would be to take to a mechanic that specialises in suspension, as newer cars have a lot more bits and pieces that can go wrong when trying to do it DIY, depending on how skilled you are car wise. wangtastic Posted June 20, 2010 Author Report Posted June 20, 2010 Thanks for the responses guys! I will try and contact a suspension specialist. I don't think we have any standalone shops over here they're all online based, but I'll see what they say. ;) Quote
