Felix Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 hey guys, i've come across a 92-93 holden nova sedan for a good price which i am going to pick up later this week. it has a few issues (as it should for the price), which will need to be fixed for RWC. the first thing is the drivers door, which has been rooted after a ute backed into it. i am assuming that the doors should be the same from ae90/92 4door corollas... will they fit? also the 4afe in it is supposedly seized or something. no idea really until i get it home and start fiddling. even if it needs a new engine, i imagine i can pick up a 4afe for not to much $$. the car will never be intended as a ground shaker or anything, just something reliable, comfy and cheap to run, with readily available spares. also it is an auto, is it a straighforward changeover to a manual? i've never really had anything much to do with FWD corollas so it will be an all new learning curve for me. TOMsGPTurbo Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 yep what Nick said, they are a very nice rolla and you have a lot of options down the modifying path. Personally I would go for a 100KW 4AGE or 4AGZE, I'm pretty sure you can even use a black top 4age with 6sp in them. :) If I remember correctly its either a drop in affair or one engine mount needs changing...however be warned, when changing engines etc please remember that you may encounter problems behind the dash with electronics. There is a member of Rollaclub team with a nice ae92, I'm sure he will see this thread and be of more help to you then me ;) Quote
Super Jamie Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 i'd put in whatever engine it had before, less f@$king around with loom and computer welcome to the world of front drivers. if you're working on this car yourself, you will live to regret it. front wheel drive sucks, CV joints are evil you'll also find a newer car is more expensive to maintain, especially one that's getting to that 15 yearold time when important things start breaking. my advice is to stick with a ke corolla Quote
TOMsGPTurbo Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 Corolla's are known to be strong car, tho like every car they get old and things do go wrong. The only time will you have to worry about CV joints is if your driving in a way to put more then normal stress on the CV joints, don't do skids and start turning the steering wheel side to side etc... this type of driving will limit the life of your engine, driveline and tyers. A negative aspect of owning a FWD car is the extra wear and tear that happens to your front wheels, these is due to the front wheels having to act as the steering and power delivery. Don't be put off, FWD cars are fantastic for zipping about here and there as daily drivers, and if your into drag racing, you can invest some money into a decent suspension setup and enjoy having power to the ground mucher quicker then RWD/AWD but be warned to much power and you'll fry the tyers and go no where :) Quote
TOMsGPTurbo Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 As a general rule of thumb, its a good idea to replace the clutch when the engine is out of the car, Nick is right servicing a FWD car can be expensive when you start having to do things to the clutch! Quote
Felix Posted August 15, 2005 Author Report Posted August 15, 2005 the car is an auto, and probably will stay that way in the near future. it will be for the missus mainly. it won't be for skids or anything. maybe later i may look into an engine conversion, and change to a manual. from what i have heard (from a guy who has actually done it), it is easier to drop the engine and box from a FWD corolla, than out of a ke1x. it is all the wiring and fiddly shit that makes the newer car more awkward. shit the ke16 is 37 years old, makes a 15 year old car look wet behind the ears, LOL. have you ever tried tracking down a new idler arm for a ke1x? not a big deal if the car is a weekend cruiser, or a resto shed queen, but not for a daily driver. most ke corollas are rust buckets unfortunately, and they are all getting to old for regular daily duties. the main reasons for updating are parts availability, and comfort.....especially on all the crappy rough roads around where i live now. Felix Posted August 19, 2005 Author Report Posted August 19, 2005 the car is home now. came up good with a wash. still need to clean up the interior, extremely grotty but in good nick. the engine is well and truly locked solid. hoping it is something simple like a seized starter motor. had the one in my ke15 lock up a few weeks ago, thought the 5k was rooted, was lucky there. rang a few wreckers about parts. amazingly wacol wreckers is very expensive for a 4afe....they want $650 :D the local wreckers near me only want $325. bit of a price difference. anyone have a spare 4afe laying around, or know where one is going cheap? ROLLN'03 Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 Carb fed.....? My girl has a 90' corolla. They are great cars, feel really new compared to the old rolla! Fuel economy is excellent in them. Ours is a carb feed one, they have incredibly good performance for what they are. They can mow down later model injected 4afe's easily.... But thats really not the point. They are a nice runabout though, and you can pick up some pretty cool stuff to put on 'em too - rims, kits and the like..... Wow, $325.00! They want that much for ke70 5spds up here! Quote
demuire Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 Doug: Really? weird. A friend of mine recons he got a 4AGE from them for like $250 or something ridiculous like that. Quote
Super Jamie Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 willie picked up a 4age with programmable computer and rwd dizzy for 80 bucks or something off toymods Quote
Felix Posted August 19, 2005 Author Report Posted August 19, 2005 would love to do a conversion. just seems like to much of a hassle atm, as i want to get the car on the road within the next month. i saw a twinky ae82 in the tradingpost for $650 or so, but it needs a new head or something. more rooting around and $$ then i really want to expend atm. seems strange that the engine is seized. the oil looks ok, no chocolate milkshake or anything. also the coolant looks normal, and isn't low or anything. doesn't seem to be obviously overheated. there is no holes in the block, that i can see anyway. the car looks as though it has been regularly serviced, has a sticker for next service at 233,000 km on the inside of the windscreen....has 233,010km on the speedo. i don't mind paying the $325 for the 4afe at the local wreckers, would prefer to get out of it cheaper if possible. it might be the way to go, if there isn't something stupidly simple stopping this one turning over. i just asked if anyone had one laying around as generally they are looked upon as boat anchors. Fook, that is strange. i have found at that place price can depend on who is working the counter at the time. going for another stickybeak. Quote
Felix Posted August 19, 2005 Author Report Posted August 19, 2005 willie picked up a 4age with programmable computer and rwd dizzy for 80 bucks or something off toymods i'll take 3 of those Quote
ROLLN'03 Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 (edited) How come the engine (girlfriends) is labelled as a 4afe??? Would it have been changed from the injectors to a carb??? :D Edited August 19, 2005 by ROLLN'03 Quote
demuire Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 Doug: Yes, I think that's the case with most wreckers - depends who you get at the counter. I've paid less than half the quoted price when I got to the counter :D Doesn't happen too often though. Are you sure it's the engine that's seized? And not the gearbox? Apart from that... Ummm... I think 4AFE is like 4AGE, non-interference, so it wouldn't be valves contacting pistons... Dunno. I don't know much about engines. I sure as hell don't know anything about replacing a head gasket :D Quote
demuire Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 How come the engine (girlfriends) is labelled as a 4afe??? The "e" in "4afe" means EFI. Quote
