and most old toyota live axles are through hardened which is much stronger

and can be resplined as such where as other car manufacturers may only have used

case hardening which is a lot weaker and cannot be resplined unless possibly heat treated,

thats why certain types of diffs have a large range of aftermarket billet axles to suit, this is my

understanding so far from what i have seen...

If that's true styler, then it could be more about the actual material used to make the axles than the hardening itself.

 

Low/Mild carbon steels can only be Case hardened

 

Medium and higher carbon steels can only be through hardened.

 

If they are case hardened they are probably mild steel and without looking for more data, the fatigue limit of this material will be lower.

Yeah I'll get you a pic in the next couple of days Tom, in Hobart at the moment. The other 2x I've broken snapped were the spline has twisted on that one. This one twisted there, then continue to twist further down the axle in a spiral break, wait till you see it! :) I can you imagine the trouble I had trying to get the centre out of the housing with that much axle sticking back up the axle tube!! :)

 

Tuppawear is banned from my shed...... unless its containing tastey moresels or nut/bolts. :bash: The boxes are just handy for storing stuff.

I'm sure I saw an snapped axle remover tool at the last Tupperware party I went to.

Size means nothing, its the grade of the metal.

 

I was talking to my mechanic mate yesterday about axles. He said they could buy these gauranteed never to break race use only ultra light axles for customers saloon car diffs from some place in Melbourne. The funny thing was they were way skinnier than the stock axles. Just better stuff.

 

The Kouki axle in my diff expands once or twice in diameter as it approaches the bearing. Its a fair lump of a thing, bout the same size as borg warner. Probably not made of sandstone, however. Either that or they seem to last longer in diffs with lsd available as said above.

Surely that's been cracked a long time from the rust down in the broken face.

 

It certainly makes an LSD look good in comparison to locking.

 

Mantlepiece time! You can show it to your grandkids for "what I was doing when I was your age.."

Yeah I would have busted that one..... :jamie: might have even been back in the CT12 days actually!!! so at least 3-4 years ago.

 

I've got a few bit and pieces like that for stories between my rollas and the mazda. Busted and bent axles, busted gearbox bit, busted wheels etc. I should get you a pick of my mazda diff "bommy-nocker" pinion. Death with a spline! :jamie:
