ranko_87 Posted June 5, 2010 Report Posted June 5, 2010 Hey all, Has anyone ever weighed their KE20. I was assuming mine would weigh similar to the kerb weight listed in my manual, to my surprise my ke20 sedan with cage, race seat, no carpet, no hood lining, with half a tank of fuel weighed in at 938kg. I don't understand why it is so heavy. It has a 3k, 4 spd, banjo diff. alloy wheels, etc. what do you guys think Andrew Quote
Redwarf Posted June 5, 2010 Report Posted June 5, 2010 Maybe a litlte fat, but pretty near the mark. 20's have never weighed 800kg, I don't care what anybody says, or what "the book" says. My stripped, caged, lightened 25 is 842kg, with minimal fuel. My 55 was about 960kg, with moderate Jenny Craig treatment. Lightest one of those I have ever come across was 890kg. Quote
coln72 Posted June 5, 2010 Report Posted June 5, 2010 But we both know someone who said his '20 weighed under 700kg, don't we Red......... Quote
Redwarf Posted June 5, 2010 Report Posted June 5, 2010 But we both know someone who said his '20 weighed under 700kg, don't we Red......... Yep, never went on the scales though. However, it was damn light. Quote
7shades Posted June 5, 2010 Report Posted June 5, 2010 Back in ye olden days I knew a guy who (like me) was running a caged TA22, except his was lightened by way of a holesaw. This is fine, except he probably should have done a spot of seam welding beforehand. Over the course of several events, the shell basically divided itself by zero and imploded :) Quote
coln72 Posted June 5, 2010 Report Posted June 5, 2010 How light did Peter get his KE10 (or was it a KE05 - it was only half a KE10 when he had finished) back in the day??????? Quote
Des Posted June 6, 2010 Report Posted June 6, 2010 938kg seems rather heavy for a small car to me. My V6 RT142 had a cast iron motor, Auto, Full trim, Spare wheel, 8 inch diff, 14x6 fronts and 15x8 rears and that was 1180kgs. Fuel light was on and no driver. Quote
13BT_KE20 Posted June 6, 2010 Report Posted June 6, 2010 i would say mine is close if not more than 1000kgs, doesnt take much for the weight to add up bare motor is probably lighter than a K motor but everything else isnt: turbo+manifold exhaust coolers gbox tailshaft diff suspension (rear leafs are considerably heavier with extra leafs added) brakes cage fuel set-up When my car is running again ill chuck it on a weigh bridge and find out exactly what it weighs Quote
toyocharged Posted June 6, 2010 Report Posted June 6, 2010 (edited) My brother and I have had both our car on the scales at mallala and they came in at 850kg with driver, both run 4age 20V, t50, alloy cage, they have been on a diet but could probably lose 10kg if we went nuts with the holesaw. The nephews Ke55 and Ke30 with 3sgte run at about 950kg with driver Edited June 6, 2010 by toyocharged Quote

The nephews Ke55 and Ke30 with 3sgte run at about 950kg with driver Cages can be pretty heavy, depending on what they are made from, and how comprehensive they are. I had my ae71 with 20v conversion, ae86 diff, bigger brakes. Tools in the back, full interior minus carpet and door trims, spare tyre, all seats etc. It was 1060 with me in it. That was on the weigh bridge at the dump. If you deduct all the loose crap and myself you are looking about 930kg, near enough to what the book says. Vehicle weights are the most lied about shit amongst car enthusiasts. I had a guy tell me once his ke70/7age was "about 700kg". Thats with a celica diff in it too. He had a full interior minus sound deadening, no other weight reduction to speak of. I said ok then you should spank me in a race, 1.8 litre/700 kg vs 1.6 litre and 1060 kg. So we lined em up and he got pantsed. Do not believe everything people tell you. Edited June 6, 2010 by LittleRedSpirit Quote

The nephews Ke55 and Ke30 with 3sgte run at about 950kg with driver My Ke20 is bog stock, minus carpet and hoodlining, drivers seat swapped to a race seat. bulk head added behind rear seat. steel whells swapped to wider alloys, coil overs, ke70 front rotors and calipars. Roll cage, twin carb 3k and salsbury style tail shaft. I thought it would weigh in around 820kg - 850kg but was surprised when it weighed it in at 938kg. What do you think would be a reasonable weight for my ke20 in historic trim? Would the sound deadning from the inner gaurds and uder body make much difference, and lightening the rear seat etc? Cheers Andrew Quote

altezzaclub Posted June 6, 2010 Report Posted June 6, 2010 Surely all that tarry sound deadening on the steel panels wouldn't weigh more than 10kg? Serious weight loss comes from fibreglass panels and plastic windows. On the rally Datsuns we replaced the front guards, bonnet, bootlid and boot floor with glass panels, gutted the doors and all windows except the windscreen were polycarb. That was probably 10-15% lighter, so it was the same as that much power increase. I used to run in Clubman's handicap racing, so we practiced with the car as it was, then for the first race I took out the tools and spare tyre and jack so that I was up near the front at the finish. For the second race I took out the back seat and took off the aircleaner, which kept me up near the front again! So pulling say 30kg out makes a noticeable difference. If you were faster than your handicap by a certain amount they would penalise you. Quote
