Bamboo Posted June 2, 2010 Report Posted June 2, 2010 (edited) I actually used the search function and found this. http://www.rollaclub.com/board/index.php?s...17948&st=15 I'm about to buy a pump for the KE50 with a 3kc, build date 2/77. will a 78 to 83 pump work? I thought all k pumps would be pretty much the same. ebay and the above thread have told me otherwise. there are freakin millions of k engine pumps. Maybe I should pull mine off first to use as a sample! does any one have a list of all the differences? Edited June 3, 2010 by Bamboo Quote
sammo[RL] Posted June 2, 2010 Report Posted June 2, 2010 I think the main differences will be where the heater hose and or by-pass hose connect...Have a look at whats in the car, and compere it to photos of the items on ebay.... And yes there are lots of them on ebay, but that means you should pick one up cheap! I got one in a box load of parts, brand new ,cost me $3.65! Quote
Evan G Posted June 2, 2010 Report Posted June 2, 2010 i paided $65 to my door for a 4k waterpump Quote
ke70dave Posted June 2, 2010 Report Posted June 2, 2010 I'm unsure if it applies to 3k's, but on the 4ks there is a difference in pumps if you have a fluid coupling in your radiator fan, or if it is fixed. something to do with the "high cam" series of 4k's. someone may need to confirm this though. Taz_Rx Posted June 3, 2010 Report Posted June 3, 2010 Yeah not only is the configuration of hose in/oulets different, but the bolt pattern to the engine fan can differ also. The 3k in the KE50 would be the same fan PCD as a KE30/55. As ke70Dave illuded to a KE70 has a different fan PCD as the were the first K's with a viscous fan. Can you get us a pic of the pump on the motor now? Quote
RainWarriorDregs Posted June 3, 2010 Report Posted June 3, 2010 i'm doing up my 4k aswell and need a new water pump. so if i'm running a thermo fan i don't need to worry about the PCD of the bolts for the fan right? then just make sure i get one that looks the same as my old one? cos i got a thermo REAL cheap, thought i may aswell use it Quote

I'm not working tomorrow so I'm picking this up. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Toyota-COROLLA-3K-3...#ht_3437wt_1137 it's down the road and they allow pick up. I think I'll whip the old one off, take the verniers with and make sure! I thought a water pump would be one of the simpler thinks on a k motor! On a lighter note, the KE50 came with the denso starter. That looks easy at least! Quote

No - you still need a pulley to drive the pump regardless of the fan you use. PCD's need to match. There are, from my experience 3 different pulley sizes. The Centre hole changes diameter, and there are 3 PCD sizes. There are 2 common pumps, the third, as far as I can tell, appears to only be on the KE1x's The location of the pulley on the shaft also varies, so you need to make sure your fan belt is in line with your crank pulley. I think (but not certain) that the issue with heater hoses is mainly to do with the thermostat mount, not the water pump. Different versions of this have heater hoses coming out in various spots, as well as emissions gear. Edited June 3, 2010 by philbey Quote
towe001 Posted June 3, 2010 Report Posted June 3, 2010 Think i might have to dig up the water pump from my old 4k (ke55) and see if it'll match up to my 5k at some stage. Or has it already been done ? Quote
Bamboo Posted June 3, 2010 Author Report Posted June 3, 2010 Mods, I feel that knowledge Base/FAQ needs a K engine water pump section. From the looks of things this thread may start the rot? It's a great section but I think you all know it needs a little update? I'm happy to give 2 cents. boo Quote

I've also found 3x different types of pump PCD's/Centre holes being KE10, KE30-55 & KE70. The distance from the pump mounting face to the front of the pulley mounting face varies between then all. HOWEVER, if you use the matching pulley from the pump then the V-belt grooves all line up with the same crank pulley. Easiest way to get yourself into trouble here would be to use say a KE55 style pump with a KE70 pulley, then the pump belt groove would be too far towards the motor. The second issue is even if you have the right pump (PCD wise) the heater hose in/outlets still vary quite a bit. For example the earlier KE55's (without rear swaybars - round headlights) had a heater hose coming out of the back of the head. The later KE55's (with square headlights) had a plate on the back of the head and this outlet then came from the thermostat housing. Then becuase the location of this outlet was different the bypass hose was also different being 3/8 rather than 1/2 IIRC. So yeah, thats why I just asked for a pic, then it would be sooo much easier to identify a replacement. I going to hazard a guess that the one you've pictured in the ebay is actually a KE70 pump. If this is the case you'll have to try and find a KE70 pulley, plus your bypass valve will be 1/2" out of the thermostat and 3/8 into the pump. Let me know if I'm right. :abuse: Quote

Hint Hint. :abuse: It's not just the Mods. BUT reality is the reason I haven't done it is because I've not got the actual dimensions of each, I just know they don't fit. I'll measure mine up and if some kind associate can post their motor pump dimensions as well that would be cool. Quote
