Expect to have a fairly reliable daily 5K (best option IMO) making around 65rwkw if worked to be fun. That is including cam however. If you are doing the mods you say that you're already doing I suggest modifying the cam also. I still get 500+ km per 45L tank in mild suburban driving and made it to 600km travelling to Sydney and back recently! This was better than when it had the stock 4K and mine now has 5K with cam and all the other mods. In fact, the right cam choice could be an efficiency and power increase. 5K is better than 4K for economy because of the larger bore since it doesn't need as much fuel to push up hills.

thanks for that everyone :( i reakon i'll have a look around for a 5k then :no: and for the record, i got my bog stock 4k 4 speed in my ke70 to 145kmh at 8200rpm :D

had experience with 3, 4 & 5k's and in order it would be

5k - love torque

3k - not a bad motor

4k - sorry it should of been tied to a rope and used as an anchor.

 

All will bolt in with basically no mods in the later corollas and all external accessories bolt up. I found no issues finding parts for 5k's either. Repco had all of the stuff needed and the engine builder had no issues getting pistons etc to suit.

 

Had too 5k powered Corollas over the years (KE35 and KE20) and both were lots of fun in different ways :D due to different mods. One was a torque monster and the other was built to rev to 8000rpm +

Yea I pretty much agree with that about the 4k's.... except for the dished piston variations which scream compared to the hohum flat top piston versions. I've had a couple of dished 4k's and quite a few flattop 4k's over the years and there is no comparison between the two.

I'm gonna spend $1000 on freshing up the bog stock 4k and keep it original, sure i could put a 4age but wtf for?

 

4kc - don't need to upgrade diff/brakes etc

4age - diff/brakes wiring

 

4age complete in a ke55 would be more than 4grand?

 

4kc - originality + simplicity = low power and i don't mind at all

 

if you wanna rip skids buy a commodore

Evan, I hope you are going to put a reground cam in it. Go a Tighe 112. Will wake up an otherwise stock 4k. :D

 

my machinist gave me a WTF look when i asked if i could send the cam to tighe. i gave him the specs on a tighe 112 and his gonna get a local guy to do it.

hey felix i was recommended a Tighe 104 by Dean from Tighe. reckon that sounds good?

 

this is with some headwork (port and polish, port matched), 4-1 extractors and a 32/36 (i know, too big, but its all i got :( )

 

EDIT: oh yeah its a 4k :D

Go for it. :D Will go great in your warm 4k. Should give you a strong midrange to topend.

 

I found with my old 4k with a tighe 113 (same advertised cam timing, but with a bit less lift than yours) it went hard from 3000-7500 with a similar setup. I ran just under 10:1 CR with 4-1's, some headwork, shimmed valvesprings and a 28/36 DCD.

i thought it was going to fly apart but it was fine! my mate couldnt believe it! haha.

 

What would be the best suggested cam grind for a 3k? looking at midrange to topend power..
