Hmmm. rat rod and rat look... fail...

A rat rod, by definition is a street rod (in the legal sense of the word, "A Street Rod shall mean a vehicle that has a body and frame that were built before 1949, that has been modified for safe road use, or a replica of a vehicle the body and frame of which were built before 1949." - DPI website.)

From a street rod/hot rod, it follows a particular style of build, where function outweighs form. That's why things like fancy paintwork, properly lined up panels, rust repairs etc are left off in favour of engine conversions and modifications and suspension and chassis strengthening...

That right there is the traditional definition of a HOTROD, not a rat rod

You take an original car and 'hot' it up to make it faster.

with that said Hotrod patina on an original cars is very cool

if your gonna be proud of a car that looks shit, your gonna wanna hope it goes like hell.

end of story.

and theres a big difference between a rusty shitty old corolla and some of those genuine cars posted in this thread. at the end of the day, if your driving a piece of shit corolla, and it looks like a piece of shit corolla, 99% of people are going to think nothing more than, look at that pauper, he really could do with a new car...

There is only one rusty Rolla that looks really cool.. It's from Japan, driftcar, quad lights, silver car with lots of battle scars and rust, it's awesome. Would never call it a rat rod though. Oh yeah, and the white one is a piece of shit Rolla, that was my point.....

FACE...... PALM.

the term "rat rod" is overused and hackneyed. The concept of hitting a good paintjob with steel wool is stupid. Painting faux patina on sucks.

I love the traditional rods, forties and fifties lake style rods; flat black and flat oxide red BUT THEY ARE NOT RAT RODS!

I don't roll with the contrived look.

Don't mind an authentic rusty body dropped on and never painted, that's all good. But so many people just try too hard.

This guy knows what's up. Pretty much sums up my thinking Philbey!

but what is it for?

Traditional hot rods were built to be the fastest car the owner could afford. Most of the cash had gone towards the driveline, with little to none left (at that stage) to repair/paint the body. This is why they usually had original worn paint (patina), or primed in flat black. They were unfinished!!!

"Rat rod" has become such a 'trend' lately, the original hot rodders of the 40s and 50s would be finding it quite amusing.

Oh, allow me to retort... You'll find there's a Street Rod, which is any restored car from the prescribed era, generally modded to lightly tuned engine specs and "Rod" modifications, such as removed front panels, big/little tire combination etc, but not always... Many still run full panels and un touched suspension.

Then there's Hot Rods, which are quite simply HOTTED up Street Rods. They're the ones with superchargers or stacks, over the top paintwork and stance. that sort of thing. The sort of thing that makes random women flash the driver to show their approval.

Then there's Rat Rods... which is a Hot Rod which was built on a low ass budget, in someone's carport. Cheap home modifications, weird parts sourced from unusual places... Basically, a whatever-i-can-get-my-hands-on-to-make-it-go-like-stink approach.

A Hot Rod can have some crazy huge dollars spent on it, where as a Rat Rod won't. It's against the nature of what Rat Rodding is.

Oh, and Original Car??? What do you mean by that?

The ASRF went to great lengths to get approval for special licensing legislation put into place in regards to Rods. Anyone on here got a pre 1949 corolla??? Because that's what the Australian Street Rod Federation agreed was the appropriate era for anything to be classed as a Rod... Street, Hot or Rat.

The thing of it is, to me, deliberately rusting out a corolla? what the effin hell is anyone wanting to do that for??? Another classic corolla dying? yeah man, that's real cool... remind me to beat anyone who does that deliberately with a stick...

Trust me, corollas don't need your help to rust. They can do it fine themselves... if you want to live the dream, then get one that's already f69ked, don't take to a good shell with a grinder the get the "look"...

I have a KE55 corolla, and I like the "original rat-rod" look, or rat-look.

I agree with everyone saying people shouldnt go at a car with sand papper and a grinder to create the rat look

but what about the original ones?

My car has fadded paint on one side and chipped but shinny paint on the other, surface rust on the roof, boot and doors.

Obviously I am fixing the holey rust, but I'm not going to paint it, or fix the dints and bent front and rear bars.

I think it gives my car character, it shows that my car has had a life, almost lost it, and then been given a second chance

People have asked me why spend all this money on the interior and engine, and leave the outside in the state it is.

To me that shows intrest, and I don't think there are many Corollas or any other model of car out there quite like mine.

Which is what I am going for, something different.

So don't knock Ratrods and Ratlooks because I think they have more of a story then the proper resto cars and hotrods.

and it shows you don't have to have a lot of money to get noticed
