silverra23 Posted May 2, 2010 Report Posted May 2, 2010 My brother is heavily into Kombi's and goes camping in his immaculate split window panelvan a lot, and I have developed a hankering to join him. I didn't want to have a Kombi though and have always liked the Type 3's, so I decided I would hunt down a Squareback (wagon). I have had a few near misses on buying ones recently, but finally came up trumps with this one. Found it on the aussieveedubbers forum. It was in Sydney so I pursued the owner with a few phone calls..it sounded great so I had my brother check it out on Wednesday night and put down a deposit for me. Handily I was already going to be in Sydney last weekend to catch up with friends and family, so me and my brother went and collected it on Sunday afternoon. I have to work out how I am going to get it down to Melbourne - truck, trailer, rego it up there, unregistered vehicle permit from vic, etc etc etc. Plans are to tidy it up a little.. and then cruise... and go camping with my brother in his gorgeous Kombi. Here is a couple of quick shots taken today Here are a couple from before the present owner got hold of it The photos disguise a few spots of rust in the usual places.. the bumpers need rechroming.. tyres need replacing and walls re-doing, and the interior needs a tidy up, but over all its going to be awesome! I seriously love this car already :) Here is a photo of the Kombi my brother owns that started this whole VW thing. Its awesome. Quote
Trev Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 I don't think I have ever seen a square back, Are they pretty rare? Kombi has been done very nicely, Only ones you really see these days are the single window with sliding doors. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 One of my mates has like 4x split windows in a paddock. ..... and No he doesn't want to sell any of them. :) Quote
silverra23 Posted May 3, 2010 Author Report Posted May 3, 2010 Squareback is not that rare... none of the Type 3's are as common as Beetles, but I wouldn't say any of them are rare as yet, always a few for sale. A proper ridgy didge panelvan version of the square on the other hand is most rare.. and most cool :) Quote
RA28GT Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Yay another rollaclub member with a type 3! Square looks awesome man, doesn't need anything but a little tidy up and maybe some spline rotating for some low pleasures :) Quote
silverra23 Posted May 3, 2010 Author Report Posted May 3, 2010 Thanks :) I think its low enough for every day duties. I don't want to go mega low as I think that chops the front suspension out, gets a wee bit uncomfortable when riding the bump stops, and attracts too much attention from the popo. I do like your airbag plans though!! Quote
KEhendo Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 loving this adam. do you know what the bumpers with the over riders and nerf bars are from? from what i understand in 71 they had already gone to the later larger more square bumpers. do you know if the chrome window 'wether shields' (for lack of a better word) are made by a company or where made for this car by a previous owner? i want a good look over this when it's in town. :) Quote
silverra23 Posted May 3, 2010 Author Report Posted May 3, 2010 You know your type 3's kehendo :) Yes it is a late model with early model bumpers fitted, and then the overriders on them. The overriders are a flat4 product. http://www.flat4.co.jp/english/dtail-bd.html#BD-645 - available from lots of different suppliers. The wind deflectors are specific to my model, but they are made for heaps of different VW's. Can also get coloured perspex ones. Here is one place I found that sells them. http://www.jcwhitney.com/in-channel-stainl...s/p2004999.jcwx Quote
KEhendo Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 i wouldn't say i know them, i just take more than a passing intrest in them. :bash: thanks for the links. the should come in handy later on. :bash: Quote
parrot Posted May 7, 2010 Report Posted May 7, 2010 Here you go Adam, this may come in handy! VW fanbelt change Quote
silverra23 Posted May 24, 2010 Author Report Posted May 24, 2010 Well I collected Veronica Buttercup from my brother on Saturday. He was pretty keen not to hand over the keys actually... I replaced the plug leads since the old ones were cracked and falling apart. What a c**t of a job that is...... there has been some dodgy servicing done before me I suspect too, since there was a spare spark plug sitting in one of the tubes. Any way on Sunday we trundled down to have a look at the VW nats.. some nice cars there.. and then about 12.30 I hit the road and headed for Melbourne. Veronica cruised well at 65-70mph on the speedo (later confirmed as around 110) and just ate up the miles. I had originally planned on stopping when I ran out of light, but when I hit Albury at 6pmish, I thought bugger it lets go for home. It was rather chilly in there by the end as there is no evidence of a heating system... more clothes on kinda fixed that, but I can't see that being a convincing strategy for those of the fairer sex! Here are a few pics I took on the way home: Refuelling behind the Big Merino's arse... On the road some where Bridge at Gundagai Wallan Service Centre final pit stop Wallan again Home! Never driven a car that gets this much attention.. one bloke nearly drove me off the road in his eagerness to give me the thumbs up. Very amusing. Plans now that she is home is to first save up a bit of coin.. then address some of the things that are becoming apparent: - wandering front end - service and tune - major rainfall inside the cabin above driver and passengers feet - new tyres - fix the little bit of rust before it becomes big bits - heating? - longer term I want to get the rear seat trimmed to match the front.. and sort out the door trims and carpets which are good but not great. KEhendo Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 looking great. good to see you got it and yourself home in one piece. i'm guessing you got the car roady and rego in nsw, does that mean you can do a straight swap into vic reg or do you need another roadworthy? Quote
silverra23 Posted May 27, 2010 Author Report Posted May 27, 2010 Yes the car got a roady in NSW and rego'd up there. Its in my brothers name, but hopefully it won't be too hard to transfer it to me down here. Probably will need another roady, not sure. Quote
