So, my KE70, which previously has had no problems, was in the middle of a 50km journey, when I noticed smoke coming from the bonnet. I pulled over, and let it sit for a bit, and eventually pulled off the radiator cap (i realize this is not overly safe) and it started blowing water etc everywhere. I let it sit for a bit longer, and tried driving again, but the temp gauge was past the hot stage, so I pulled over again and got a lift. The car is currently parked a fair way from my house, and I'll attempt to get it in the morning. I'm wondering what could cause this, and what I should take with me to fix this....I presume some coolant. Any other suggestions/ideas?

yea you could just fill the coolant up and be on your way.

turn the heater on full blast as this will help to cool down the motor.

i have no idea how to remove the thermostat :P

The hose on top of the radiator trace that back to the motor and the alloy thing its fitted to thats where the thermostat is.

1. do I need to buy anything before I get to the car?

- Tools, coolant, and a book (service/repair manual) on the car

2. Do you have any pictures to assist?

- Not on me, the book does but including a troubleshooting guide.

3. Do I have to do it or can I just fill up the coolant?

- Let it sit over night. Check the coolant level when you get back to the car and replace it with just plain old water cause the head gasket will have died so the head will be coming off for a new gasket and a head repair.

Remember this happening to my first car, but i was only about 2km from home. Dad towed the thing back home, he told me to let it sit over night and then go and check the car over - coolant level, oil level and take the oil cap off and have a look to see if there was any white/milky goop there. Needed a refill on the coolant and off i went back into town.

What could have caused it

1. Loose fan belt (not turning the water pump and the fan not spinning)

2. Blockage in the radiator or possibly the motor.

3. Water pump old and needs replacing.

Never ever run the motor or any motor with no thermostat. Its there to make sure every part of the head gets its fair share of coolant

But as old Evan said if it happens again turn the heater up full - acts as a second radiator for the motor. On a late model car it does sweet phuck all but on a early model you'll see the temp drop.

so if it is a head gasket (which is what I'm thinking since I tried to start it up again yesterday, but it kept overheating still), what price am I looking at to get it fixed? Chances are I'll be selling it since I don't have any cash, and I was just keeping it as a second car. I'd like to be able to tell the buyer what the price would be to get it fixed. Would people be interested in buying the car, seeing as it would need to be towed? Guess I could just put it on ebay. Ideas for prices would be appreciated too.

Cheers,

you really can't tell untill you pull the head off and get it checked by a machinist.

if the head is slightly warped it will need a skim (~$100) if the head is bent it will need a recondition (~$500) but for that price you could just pick up a 2nd hand head from here, or even just a whole new engine.

i sold a complete 4k and gearbox for like $100...

don't jump to conclusions though, get the car home, compression test it, check for bubbles in the radiator etc.
