jason12 Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 Hey, after ages i finally got around to putting a motor back into my ke55. Now the motor ran fine in the car it was from but in my car it doesnt want to start. It turns over but just backfires out of the carb and doesnt seem to wanna start. I was thinking either vac lines are wrong (but looked at old pics of my motor and they seem the same) or something timing related. Anyone got any ideas? Cheers, Jason Quote
Evan G Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 back fireing out the carby would mean that timing of the dissy is out Quote
KENut Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 Yup, timing is usually the cause :) Its a stretch but you should be able to reach the ignition key with one hand and the dizzy with the other. Adjust the dizzy while cranking and hopefully voila, it runs (assuming dizzy is correctly installed). Quote
Bamboo Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 Check you've got the plug leads on in the correct order. It's this or the timing is way out. It's possible you timed it on number 4 and not number 1. You wouldn't be the first to do it. This will also cause backfire/no start. Solution? Pop rocker cover of and pop dizzy cap off. Turn the engine over with a spanner until you see the timing mark and importantly the rockers on number 1 are TIGHT! make sure the rotor button is facing the lead that goes to number 1. Adjust as necessary. then from there check your leads are in the correct order. good luck Bamboo Quote

Just weird because the motor was running and the dizzy hadn't been touched. I also pulled the carb off and it was FULL of fuel, will put the carb back and new dissy on and let u know how I go Quote
jason12 Posted March 29, 2010 Author Report Posted March 29, 2010 Got it running it was timing in the end. pretty sure timing is still out but she runs now! Ps distributors are a slut to get back in on 4ks Quote
Taz_Rx Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 Unless you work out the trick of locating the tang for the oil pump! :D Insert dizzy in correct position (disregard oil pump line up) Push it down as far as it'll go - Should sit up 5mm or so. Push down on top of dizzy and turn motor over by the crank pulley - This turns the dizzy (off the cam) but not the oil pump. You'll then get less than 180* rotation before the dizzy tang drops into the oil pump drive. Bolt down dizzy after setting timing Drive. :D Quote
