demuire Posted July 26, 2005 Author Report Posted July 26, 2005 I've re-emailed driveline.co.nz this morning. Karl and guys on garagedori seem to mostly use W boxes. Most of the AE86 drifters I've spoken to are using T50's. The only person who has said they've broken one is Josh (pink AE86), and yes, he's broken all of 1, after about a year of absolute abuse. His 4AGE is also pushing like double the power of what I'm pushing. Quote
Super Jamie Posted July 26, 2005 Report Posted July 26, 2005 I've re-emailed driveline.co.nz this morning. i don't think they place a high priority on emails, they probably get alot of tyre kickers. telephone (+64 6) 355 2757 or (+64 27) 273 2737 Karl and guys on garagedori seem to mostly use W boxes. go on then :D Quote
demuire Posted July 26, 2005 Author Report Posted July 26, 2005 go on then Must acquire moolah first. A bellhousing went up for sale today on Toymods (4A - W), but it got sold before I even saw it, $400... Quote
demuire Posted July 26, 2005 Author Report Posted July 26, 2005 I have no idea. I haven't been looking. Quote
TRD ke70 Posted July 26, 2005 Report Posted July 26, 2005 even w** boxes give problems, they use them behind townace, hiace, liteace and hiluxes. we sell them all the time for hiaces, and the one's what come back are siezed. it's like any thing mechanical, service it with the right oils and at the right distances and it will last. abuse it and it'll shorten it's life, to over come this, service it more offen. the rally car gets engine oil changes(with filter) every 2-3 rallys with Castrol RS. the Gearbox and diff get done at the same time. the average total km's is about 1000. we haven't had a gearbox or diff fail yet. (touch wood) broken plenty of axles though. Quote
blown 5k Posted July 26, 2005 Report Posted July 26, 2005 I wouldnt go fitting a W series box,a T series box will handle a fair bit,i agree with Jamie get a rebuilt box or do it yourself easiest box there is to do pretty much, what you have to remember is your dealing with what is now a fairly old box thats done lots of work and nothing lasts forever. demuire Posted July 26, 2005 Author Report Posted July 26, 2005 Chris: What oil would you recommend? Someone on one of the other forums recons I should be using thinner oil, 70/75 hypoid or something like that? My gearbox oil so far has been replaced more often than my engine oil. On average engine oil gets replaced about 4000-5000km (along with oil filter etc etc), gearbox oil about half that, even more often for diff (but only because I've had to rip the axles out quite a few times). TRD ke70 Posted July 27, 2005 Report Posted July 27, 2005 personally i'd use any Synthetic gear oil 75-90, also an old rally trick is to over fill the gearbox by about 0.5 of a litre. works really well for K boxes. it keeps the gearbox cooler, so less heat, less stress. that doesn't mean MORE IS BETTER. saying all that if the box isn't any good to start with, you'll be wasting your time. if it was me i'd rebuild a g/b and then over fill it and try that. i had great success by doing this.poor mans trans cooler. TRD ke70 Posted July 27, 2005 Report Posted July 27, 2005 i was going to quote what jamie had said. Quote
demuire Posted July 27, 2005 Author Report Posted July 27, 2005 New gearbox now has about 1.8L of oil (stock 1.5L). I ran out of oil so couldn't put in anymore. Castrol 80/90, yellow green stuff. Quote
Super Jamie Posted July 27, 2005 Report Posted July 27, 2005 (edited) top it up to 2L when you get a chance. definitely before the next event it makes sense, all the sideways action and big rpm and constant gearshifts, and especially if your engine is on a backwards tilt, oil starvation could have been your problem all along! also, if you find the tailshaft now leaks past the seal, drill and tap an angled fitting into the housing near the top of the box, to work as a secondary breather. you could even stick a bit of foam over it with a cable tie to hold it on to stop the oil vapour making a mess :jamie: Edited July 27, 2005 by Super Jamie Quote
demuire Posted July 27, 2005 Author Report Posted July 27, 2005 Drill the housing??? That sounds scary... Quote
Super Jamie Posted July 28, 2005 Report Posted July 28, 2005 is there a steel plate on top like a K gearbox? use that instead. you can drill and tap alloy, someone's added a vacuum fitting to my SU manifold with no problem. but yeah, gearbox metal is generally pretty crap. try on a dead box first Quote
