misskittay666 Posted July 23, 2005 Report Posted July 23, 2005 Hi Guys, I just got myself a 5k from All state imports (yeah i got ripped off but Oh well..) which is to go into my KE20 74 corolla.... I have no idea where to start... the motor has all the air con crap on it, and bits and pieces *i think* i don't need.... How do i pull all the extra stuff off it so I can just bolt it in? What bits would i need to buy to make it a smooth swap? I know i need to get gaskets and stuff... but am a little lost :jamie: Cameron (who used to own the peachy KE25 that was wrapped around a tree) is going to help me next weekend to put it in, i just wanted to have everything ready to go? Thanks for any help you can provide! take care Angi xx Quote
misskittay666 Posted July 23, 2005 Author Report Posted July 23, 2005 (edited) Just went downstairs to get pics of the 5K, and my bro has already started pulling it apart... so this is what it looks like... Some pics here: Edited December 17, 2005 by Tiger Quote
misskittay666 Posted July 23, 2005 Author Report Posted July 23, 2005 thanks :jamie: Hoping to put extractors on it in the future... unless of course the manifold doesnt match up with my current exhaust... the main problem i am having is knowing which bits i can pull off the motor (and leave off), as i don't want any of the fancy air con stuff etc... plus i don't know if the gearbox will line up too... i really don't want to cut her if i can help it :abuse: Quote
misskittay666 Posted July 23, 2005 Author Report Posted July 23, 2005 hrmm... don't have a clue what my engine mounts are like..... where could i get a set of those from? I am at aspley on the northside of bris? Quote
PMP020 Posted July 23, 2005 Report Posted July 23, 2005 5k into ke20 is as simple as getting dressed or undressed which ever you prefer. with pulling bits off 5k just make sure you have all the required things like dizzy, fuel pump, starter. if you are still unsure just compare it to your 3k? as you pull it apart then you'll know what you need and what you don't. Now with exhaust manifold the flange on your stock 3k exhaust (if still fitted) will be different. so reuse the 3k exhaust manifold with the 5k inlet manifold and carby and you'll be right. now engine mounts, ke20 engine mounts are pretty easy to source second hand over here in s.a so I don't know about Brisbane. chances are they'll still be alright so just make sure you loosen them before you pull your 3k or you will tear them. with your box you running 4 spd I'm guessing you'll be right just to bolt straight up to 5k. new clutch? will you be putting a new clutch on while the 5k is out? if so just make sure the splines on box are the same as new clutch 21 or 19. will probably be 21 as 19 is pretty uncommon these days. when pulling the 3k pull the box out still connected that way you can pull it off out of car then bolt it onto 5k and throw it back in. its all pretty straight forward stuff use your head and you'll be fine as its only a 3-5k engine and they are one of the simplest engines to work with. sorry for the life story but hopfully it'll help you out a bit. cheers scott Quote
misskittay666 Posted July 23, 2005 Author Report Posted July 23, 2005 Woah, thanks for the reply, u really know ur ke20's :D got a couple more q's for ya could i use my 3k carbie on the 5k? and could i use the 5k carbie jets? (the carbie i got on the 5k is broken, looks like some kinda water pipe thingy?) is it best to remove all the pollution gear from the 5K? will it still run okay? would a 3k pump be sufficient on the 5k? on the 3k it has a double row timing chain, and on the 5k it looks like a single one. can i use a double row timing chain on the 5k? Quote
PMP020 Posted July 23, 2005 Report Posted July 23, 2005 hey misskittay 3k carby will be fine as it is dotn worry about rejetting it for know. when you wana upgrade id reccomend a32/36 2L escort weber as i ran one onmy ke25 and it went hard killed any other K engine powerd rolla i lined up. i have 3k carby on my 5k and it still goes killer. i can sit on 140kph in 5th and still accel if i need to without hesitation. f@$k off all pollution gear waste of timeand wieght ensureu still have engine oil breather which is usally plumbed back into carby(inlet man) and any vaccumm lines u dissconnect you block off if not used anymore. mechanical 3k fuel pump will do the trick as there is no differnce between the 2. although if you upgrade toa eber and will be used for higher RPM situations id recommend electronic fuel pump to be on the safe side. with your timing chain if you can be botherd changeing cam and crank pulleys along with tensioners you are more than able to run your double row chain from your 3k on your 5k. hope everything goes smooth for ya (but it never does) cheers scott Quote
PMP020 Posted July 23, 2005 Report Posted July 23, 2005 sorry misskittay i tryed posting an imformative post but apparently i can't spell very well so rollaclub moderators have to check out every post before its posted. cheers scott apologise for the inconvenience Quote
Super Jamie Posted July 24, 2005 Report Posted July 24, 2005 have a read of the faq hey :D you could use the 3k carb, it won't be ideal but it will run tearing ALL the emissions crap off will make it run pretty badly, and you won't have the vacuum secondary carb. unless you're willing to sit down and figure out what everthing does and what you can remove or re-route or plug off, just leave it fuel pump will be fine yes, you can steal the double row timing gears and chain from the 3k and put them on your 5k crank and cam. very observant =) Quote
ROLLN'03 Posted July 26, 2005 Report Posted July 26, 2005 Question: Is the tailshaft for the old rollas the same as the ones that come with the 5k engine????? Quote
demuire Posted July 26, 2005 Report Posted July 26, 2005 I would assume no, but why would it matter? You're using the same gearbox yes? Quote
ROLLN'03 Posted July 26, 2005 Report Posted July 26, 2005 Yeah, same gearbox, same old rolla tailshaft, but i was just wonderin if they were the same! :D Quote
Super Jamie Posted July 26, 2005 Report Posted July 26, 2005 corollas didn't come with 5Ks, so it's an irrelevant question all K engines sit in the same spot, and you use a corolla gearbox, there's your answer Quote
Super Jamie Posted July 26, 2005 Report Posted July 26, 2005 early corollas :D haha i thought there was a 5k 70 but i wasn't sure. either way =) that means you don't have to engineer a 5k into a ke70, cool Quote
TRD ke70 Posted July 26, 2005 Report Posted July 26, 2005 yip you're right nick, it took Tony ages to find it, but it was released in Japan as a KE74. Quote
