Old fella Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 When I built my 4k I decided to use a 9" aftermarket chrome air filter setup. Bought a brand spanker to suit Holley from my local speed shop and with slight modification to the base was able to bolt it straight on. My motor does have a very lumpy cam installed and therefore lumps like crazy when idling. Last friday the engine developed a miss and a loud ticking like a bent pushrod and upon investigation, I discovered that the centre top of the air cleaner had fatigue cracked into several bits and been sucked inside the engine. I haven`t had the head off yet but I can almost imagine the damage that I will find. Just thought that I would share this info with you all in the hope that I can save someone ellse goung through what I have to. Good luck to all. Old Fella. P.s. and it wasn`t a cheap shit chinese knock off either. Quote
altezzaclub Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 Ouch! That is bad luck! When I fired up the SUs they were very grumpy at idle and I thought the same would happen with my enormous custom airbox, so I put a couple of struts on it. I'd helped Rob rivet plates over his cracked pancakes a week before. Quote

Just pulled the head off the 4k and to my real suprise.....just a few marks on the top of the piston and the same on the squish band of the combustion chamber. The miss was because the spark plug gap had been pushed shut. Valves don`t leak during a petrol test. >| :lolcry: :lolcry: :lolcry: :lolcry: Total cost....one new head gasket. Gotta be happy with that. Quote
