hi there,

i plan to do and engine conversion in my ke70/ae71 when i get one towards then end of this year. but there is one issue. i have been planning to do a 4age conversion cause i thought it would be the most logical for a daily in SA(it would be carbed). i will do some hill climbs with it and actually use the engine for its power. but i read somewhere that you can drop a 2tg into a ke70/ae71 and it will be a much cheaper power gain and i am not looking for extreme power just enough to thrash a 4k and be responsive.

i really like the idea of a twin cam ke70/ae71 so i was wondering if you guys could tell me if it is possible to get a 2tg into a ke70/ae71 with ease and low costs? or would it be better for me to stick with the carbed 4age? are there any other common DOHC Toyota engines that i can dump in there for a bit of fun. all help would be much apreciated.

thanks alot.

Alec. :no2:

2TG's are getting pretty hard to find and parts are expensive and also hard to find.

4AGE's are easy to find and parts easy to get, especially modified stuff. 20 valve engines are also cheap and go well straight out of the box.

I think 2TG's are really only for the more hardcore TA22/TE27 people these days (like me).

I think a 2tg would be worth it to beat a 4k but i have had 2 of them in my ta22 and my 1st one dropped a valve and second one bent valves and always constantly had oil leaks and thats the worst thing about a t series engine they will leak alot if you don't seal them properly, and it is reasonably easy to get a 2tg into a ke70/ae71 all you need is the ae71 crossmember t18 rubber engine mounts and bobs your uncle fannys your aunt say hello to a 2tg 70, and the 4age is the same too it will go into the ae crossmember with stock 4ac steel and rubber engine mounts, i have never actually compared a 4age to a 2tg because i'm in the middle of the 4age conversion into my 70 but i can imagine it would be a wee bit better due to efi, if you do end up going 2tg man make sure you get rid of the solex's almost right away unless they are tuned to perfection because if not they are not the kindest of carbies to keep happy so find some webbers asap

I love my 2tgs with twin solexs on, however if you are looking for a daily driver go with the 4AGE, with the 2TG you will have to be constantly retuning the carbs, they rev hard and go hard but they will go bang in a big way.

As previously mentioned parts are getting hard to find.

someone correct me if I am wrong on this but the the 4AGE is the lighter engine.

also I have read from someone that went from a 2/3T engine to a 20V they said that as expected the engine power wasn't much more but the engine was significantly smoother and nicer to use.

Hmmmmm,

Thanks for the replies, I will take it all into consideration and i think i will go with a carbed 4age, just cause i love carbs. But if a 2tg suddenly pops up out of no where all clean and working for a reasonable price with spares it is so mine. Do you guys no of a recommended importer for rwd 4age or should i get one out of a fwd rolla and rwd it. Just not to clear on how to deal with the cooling system. Have read loads of guides on loads of forums but still a bit unsure. Any advice?

I think I will just check one out in person and take photos of every thing i need and then work out how i will do it.

Thanks again. >|

I think you will find the supply of RWD 4AGE's dropped right off many years ago. You might want to get on AE86DC and check the importers. Many people these days are running FWD engines with varying degrees of correct water piping, water pump setups, alternator setups.

Another option would be to have a look on Yahoo and use a bidding service to get one. It may not end up costing anymore and you would get all the bits.

If you go 4age with carbies you will need to either lock the timing or get something to control timing advance as there is no ecu.

Yeah, i know. was thinking of doing the whole msd setup. But heard somewhere that you can use a corona dizzy and coil and mod it somehow and it should stop the whole timing advance. But got no idea how. How would you lock timing?

Get your car tuned properly. If they do it right, you won't need to retune it for a long time.
