hey guys my bro is looking to buy his first car. i reckon he should go with an older model toyota, and as it so happens there are two that stand out and are in his price range at the moment. first one is an ae82 twin cam hatch in pretty good nick no rego or roady for 800, or there is a corona wagon, unsure of year, but it is a 2.4 litre super responsive, if that makes any sense? it is going for 500 no rego or roady. i just want to know if there is anything i should look out for, and which would be better value. any help would be great guys.

When looking at the ae82 twin cam, make sure you look for rust around the hatch, rear guards and fuel filler. And the corona wagon would have the 22re motor in it. Pretty good torquey motors, again look for rust and I personally wouldnt be buying either of them if they have over 350,xxxkm's on the motor.

speaking of rust, the 82 is basically rust free from what i have seen, small bits of surface rust but thats about it. the wagon on the other hand might need a new back door, but have not had a really decent look at either yet, really need to have a good inspection. i have never been a fan of fwd's anyway, but i guess its up to him. i know which one i would be choosing. only reason i want him to get the twinky is so he can flog it round till he doesnt want it....bam i have a new motor for my coupe!

22RE have WAAAY more torque than granny could ever need...

I'll just leave it at that :jamie:

I had a corona years ago with the 2.4L efi in it. Went like shit off a shackle.. :) Only thing is the drive lines are real weak,, in 12 months i blew 5 diffs and done the center bearings in the tail shaft twice, but gearbox was great.
