RainWarriorDregs Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 well, he said that he wouldn't use a facet one to replace the mech one. he also said to find one that flows 20% more than the mech one to be safe. now i've found this pump. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT and the guy from ebay says it would be good for my application instead of a noisy facet fuel pump. the other pump i found was this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT but if its going to be noisy i'd spend the extra 10 bucks for the other one now my questions are: 1. What type of flow specs do i need from a elec fuel pump? (will 70L per hour be enough?) 2. Can i mount it in the engine bay? 3. Which one should i choose? Quote
Taz_Rx Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 Whats its purpose? Lift pump or low pressure supply for carby(s)? Quote
RainWarriorDregs Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 low pressure supply to carby i already have a lift pump in the tank right? (please be right so i don't look like a douche) haha i'm rebuilding my engine, it will be running a 32/36DGEV (no choke), mild cam (unknown at the moment, maybe a tighe104, i've been in contact with tighe cams) 4-1 extractors, free flowing exhaust and reconned head. so pretty much i just wanted to replace my mechanical fuel pump. corollaart Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 Mate you wouldnt have a pump in your tank ,sorry don't no why you think that ???.The mechanical pump does all the work. Just get a low pressure pump that flows about 70l per hour ,make a plate to cover where you mechanical pump was and block it off. don't no why your mechanic suggested two seems a bit stupit to me .Like having two wifes twice the problems. rob Quote
Taz_Rx Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 Douche!!! :( ....so nah you DON'T have an in-tank pump. All carby k's just use the mechanical ONLY. I'm personally not a huge fan of either of those pumps. The thing that makes fuel pumps noisey is the way they're mounted. If they're solid mounted to the body them its pretty obvious the vibrations of the pumps will rattle through the car. If they have some sort of rubber mounting then the noise can nearly be eliminated all together. I much prefer quality proven pumps like Holley's and Carter's. For your application a Cart green or Holley red which both put out around 70gph at 7'ish PSI would be fine. The Holley is not "self priming" so it would have to be mounted close to the tank (not in engine bay) below the bottom level of the tank. The Carter however could be mounted in the engine bay but I think it would be better in the boot or under the car. Cartres also have a very good rubber mounting system so they're quite quite, about half as loud as the Holley red in my Mazda. Both of the above mentioned pumps are more like $100-$150 depending on what sort of deal you can get, but both are also a hell of a lot better than both ebay links you posted. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 Like having two wifes twice the problems. :( and 2 x no sex still = no sex!!!! Quote
RainWarriorDregs Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 mmm... i see. yeah i don't know where i got the thought of a pump in the tank, might have misread something while looking through my workshop manual. i'm still learning about the fuel system  but now i know that the mech pump does it all. ok, so i'm looking for something with 70gph at around 7psi. Holley and Carter are what i should be looking at ay? ok sweet. from the research i've done in the last 20 mins, it seems the Holley red is 95gph, is that too much of a jump? whats like the +/- with fuel flow that the carby can take? i might look into these carter jobbies. might be able to get a deal. the carter green is the 4070 right? i'll grab some prices tomorrow. thanks guys Quote
Taz_Rx Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 Holley red capacity won't hurt, as long as you have it regulated properly. You want the carter that has a brass coloured body with a green sticker. The silver body ones are 100gph like a black but at only 6-7psi. Quote
Felix Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 low pressure supply to carby i already have a lift pump in the tank right? Really there is nothing wrong with the stock mechanical fuel pump for that combo. Quote
ninja-philbo Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 this is where the old don't fix it if its not broke comes into play i run a electric pump on my 4k only cause my mechanical pump died and was leaking fuel all over my block Quote
RainWarriorDregs Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 Doug i completely respect everything that you have to say about these cars coz you've helped me out a few times here, and given me some EXCELLENT advice  but i have the same problem as phil-keto. i keep replacing the mech pump and it keeps leaking fuel all over my block! thought if i'm spending the money on rebuilding the engine and spraying the engine bay and generally cleaning the sucker up i might as well spend 100 bucks on elec fuel pump. A reconned or new mech item would cost me that much anyway wouldn't it? Quote
Felix Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 I didn't realize your pump was stuffed. Fair enough. Do you have the spacer between the pump and block? Quote
RainWarriorDregs Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 yeah, i've got a spacer in there, i must've found the only one ever stocked in Townsville haha. they just keep shitting out on me and its been bugging me for a while. one time i had to jump start the car becuase the battery was buggered and i looked down at the pump and it was flowing ALOT of fuel onto the engine block haha. ninja-philbo Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 well my setup is very basic and usually frowned upon as i set it up in about 15 mins as i needed the car haha .. I'm usen a pump out of my nissan 720 ute it was originally a 2.2 lt carby motor not any more but run a low volume electric pump with no regulator its self priming and works a treat. just before it goes into the carby it hits a y junction where the return line is plumed it this is how it was setup on my z22 motor from factory so i didnt see why it wouldn't work my my car and it works fine so I'm happy ... i also flogged a block off plate off my nissan motor too was perfect shape and holes lined up made the job about a 15 min job lol Quote
