Hey guys,

Very new here... Love the forum... get to see rolla owners around....

anyway, i've got 2 things i need help on..

i drive a 1981 KE70 and i need to replace the ciggy lighter but can't seem to get it out of the bracket that's holding it in... any idea on how this is done?

also... i am trying to remove my entire dash.. don't know where the exact screw locations are... i am actually trying to clean the dash, there were some funny burning smell coming out from the air conditioning vents.. but that's beside the point and anyway i have found the source of that.. but i do need to remove the dash to clean the area in there...

also toying with the idea of scrapping the entire meter display and putting custom gauges in... (though not as what Valandor has done, but buying individual after market meters and fitting them together..:( )

here's a pic...

appreciate your help guys!

Welcome to Rollaclub.

This sounds like Teddy's area of expertise.

Is the lighter threaded on the back behind the dash. Some items are bolted in place.

don't think the lighter is threaded... if it was... would've been able to unscrew it...

it seems like something is holding it... i can turn it 1/3 of a turn... but not all the way... can't seem to pull it out as well...

don't know what's holding it in....

thanks for your reply.. happy to be here..

Hey there

Ok, ciggy lighter can be a bit of a bitch, but its doable. To what i know, you can't remove the black outer skirt from the ciggy lighter without breaking it off... its like 1 unit to what i know (found that out from expirence :()

Theres like a bolt thing behind it which unscrews... get a torch onto it, and ull see.

To take the rest of the dash off (going from where ure at in the pic)

- Remove cluster from car = 3 plugs in back of cluster, and 1 speed cable. To get to the 3 plugs, put hand up underneath, untill you can reach. Its doable, ive done it many times. To undo the speedo cable, you need to almost 'pinch' then end of it, where it connects into the back of the cluster. If you just try and yank it out, the holding in clip will snap off (sometimes rather brittle), and it will possibly fall out later on when ure driving around !

Now, open both front doors. On the dash, on the side(s) (now the doors are open, you can access it) - take out the 12 mm bolt, and the screw. on both sides.

Also, remove the glove box, and tray under glov box to make it an easy dis-assembly.

Up under the dash, there are 12mm nuts, which need to be removed. Stick ure head into the dash, and look UP - allll underneath the dash pad basically... undo them all.

You also have to undo the blower controles - in that pic - basically its most of those screws.

I think thats everything... give me more photos if you like, and i can explain what you will need.

Good one Teddy !

From experience give yourself a whole day to take it out, and another whole day to put it back in, if you are doing it for the first time. They are very frustrating, and as Teddy says, it's easy to break things, if you try to force them.

The consolation is there are dashboards that are much much more difficult than the KE70. I once had to remove a RA40 Celica dash completely to replace a heater radiator coil. I still have nightmares about that !

Good luck !

does any one know what is meant to go in the whole next to the demister button on the ke70? it has puzzled me for a while now

heeheh....

beats me man!! i don't even have the demister button... i mean... mine is located elsewhere...

mine is located at the area just above the fuse box...

guess it's the different locales and models these cars are made for...

Oversea's Jap models - such as the Te71 & Te72 had a botton there, just like the demister one. Except this one has a little blue symbol on it, insted of an orange one. Its also about 3/4 the size of the dimester one.

Thats all i know about that one.

The lighter unscrews from the back

Yes its from the back... abit weird design.. but seems to work..

Same as my ae92...

You need to remove that plastic panel to get to the back of it.. then unscrew it... then nothing like a $7 ciggy lighter from super cheap...

Do you use the cig lighter? Cause I don't... but then again it does come handy for charging my mobile on the run...
