rhys2229 Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 what about a VW transporter van? turbo diesel 2.5, heaps of torque , ment to be pretty quick for a van Quote
chappo12 Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 a surf is shit unless its the 3lt turbo they have over heating problems big time as well also they have every thing a little different to the 4 runner so they cost more to fix i.e to do the clutch in mine i had to get a hilux flywheel cost me 1400 to do the clutch when i had mine there an import but still i miss my surf so much Quote
Jason KE30 Posted March 5, 2010 Author Report Posted March 5, 2010 Well guess what... I found a 3lt hilux surf at a caryard in my price range. It's done 233xxx kms, 5 speed manual. Took it for a test drive and everything seemed alright. The only problem is I can't get the loan yet because I'm not 18 til the 26th of this month, but I think that if I do some sweet talking I may be able to put a deposit on it and they can hold it for me til I get the loan. Is there anything that I should look at before I put a deposit on it? Cheers Jason Quote
chappo12 Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 well you got the right motor thats good just get a feel for it check your usual stuff join the surf owners club and get a check list i love the look of these trucks. Quote
chappo12 Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 oh and make sure it realy has done those kms also if its an import it might have done 200000kms at the trafic lights in korea or some thing so take that into account and get the rad check asap they do over heat like crazy well the 2.4 ltr does Quote
7shades Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 (edited) The 2LTE has gotta be one of the worst engines Toyota made. The older, mechanical injected 2LT is infinitely better. Replaceable cyl liners, nitrate hardened crankshafts and bigger rods, main journals, and oil injection under the piston skirts... Mine was running close to 100kw on stock internals and epic boost levels. That said, the KZ (3.0) are light years better than both. MUCH more useable torque. And its only usually the automatics that overheat... Radiator, double row a/c condenser, oil cooler and A/T cooler all shoved up front + Australian heat = Fail I flogged the absolute pisser out of my LN61 on and off road, low range crawling, towing, down the beach... all up here in the sweltering tropics on a stock radiator and never managed to cook it. Moral of the story is don't buy an automatic LN130 Surf... But a manual KZN130 should be relatively safe. Edited March 5, 2010 by 7shades Quote
Jason KE30 Posted March 5, 2010 Author Report Posted March 5, 2010 Awesome cheers guys. I'll be headin to the caryard after work with my dad. He's very mechanically minded so he'll know some stuff to look out for. Hopefully we'll be able to work out a deal... Quote
philthy30 Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 Awesome cheers guys. I'll be headin to the caryard after work with my dad. He's very mechanically minded so he'll know some stuff to look out for. Hopefully we'll be able to work out a deal... I own a 95 surf 3 litre turbo its the best truck ever, only problems i have had is the radiator shit itself and a mates one blocked up the radiator and did the head gasket so might pay to rip the radiator out and get it cleaned/recored. All in all great trucks. Quote
Jason KE30 Posted March 6, 2010 Author Report Posted March 6, 2010 Ok, so I went to the caryard yesterday and me and my dad gave it a thorough going over. And other than a very slight crack in the exhaust manifold, and needing a couple of new tyres, all was good, so i put a deposit on it. The timing belt had been replaced at 170xxx kms. Got for a very cool price of $6500. Oh, and for those of you playing at home, it's a 1994 KZN130, imported in 98. Getting the keys at the end of this month, subject to me getting the finance. Very unlikely that I'll have a problem with that. Cheers for everyones help. Quote
7shades Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 6500 is pretty damn good. If you're getting a new manifold, may I suggest getting a dump pipe made up while you're there. Makes a WORLD of difference. Instant spool up, mountains more torque. 4x4 that chirps 2nd = win :P Quote
Jason KE30 Posted March 7, 2010 Author Report Posted March 7, 2010 Haha. Yea I'm considering just going all out with a new exhaust system. My mate owns a maverick that has mountains of torque. That thing can pull second gearies and get sideways with ease. Not that I condone such behaviour :P. Quote
Jason KE30 Posted March 7, 2010 Author Report Posted March 7, 2010 And here's a picture I took of the beast yesterday. Yes it's dirty but that'll change once I get my mitts on it. Cheers Jason Quote
7shades Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 oooh SSR-G.... fancy :P And its not burgundy! Sooo many burgundy 130's with failing clearcoat... Quote
