hey guys just bought my first rolla its a KE38 wagon, 5spd, factory aircon, 180,000Ks.

its in ooook condition apart from pretty bad rust above the doors and a grinding diff!!

was wondering how much is a second hand diff for a ke38 is? have been looking into welding it.. but if diffs aren't too much might weld this one and buy another open center.

thanks guys, its pretty fun to drive just the diff gets a bit worrying over 60 :) is there any write ups on here about welding diffs? just want to know whats involved

Welding more than likely wont sort out your grinding problem. while it could be the spider gears, id be thinking more Crownwheel/Pinion or Bearings.

You say its gets pretty bad over 60. unless your doing 60 around corners, I'd say its something more than just spider gears.

As for the prices, depends where you are. In SA at U-Pull-It, Drum to drum diff is $95. Elsewhere could be different. Might be able to pick up a cheap late KE30/55 diff alot cheaper from someone in the wrecking forums here.

yeah a mate has said sounds like the wheel bearings and no oil in the diff.. drum to drum sounds good for $95, what fits? does it have to be from a KE38?

You could always just try replacing all of the bearings in your diff first. Under $50 should get you a couple of axle bearings and the conical diff bearings. The noise is most likely just an axle bearing but if you're taking them out then you might as well do the diff ones too.

Any KE30/35/36/38/50/55 diff would be a bolt in replacement, however depending on what it came from it might have different ratios to the wagon one.

have got my other car up and running so i don't really need this anymore, will be for sale soon.

how much should i be asking?

Don't sell the 38. Get rid of the "Other Car" and give some TLC this Corolla deserves.

From what I can see of this 38, start the asking price at $1,000.

Make sure you get the same BRAND of diff as yours. Some cars have a Jap diff, but most will have the Borg Warner. The problem is that the

tailshaft uni is different.

Easiest way to tell "diff"erence :P is that the Borgy will have a service plate facing the back of the car. If you're still not sure, look

UNDER the diff centre and it will either say Borg Warner or not! :laff:

Cheering that you've got air-con mate. Get some rims :)

Diffs in KE30/35/36 upto 1977 were jap diffs. From 1977 onwards they were Borg-Warner.

What you would have is a Borg-Warner.

i don't really want to sell it but i can't afford to keep both and if i did it would end up sitting and rotting away, i don't have time to fix up two cars let alone one!!

id rather let someone else work on it and appreciate it

and the "other car" is a gemini panel van so its ok :D

probably be for sale this week or next depending on how the gemmy is going
