Corolla_Kid Posted July 14, 2005 Report Posted July 14, 2005 I agree with Jamie on this one. Having had both i know that the open diff is much preffered to a welded up one. Hearing little bits of weld bouncing around in the housing when you back off can be a bit disconcerting at times. Quote
Trendact Posted July 14, 2005 Report Posted July 14, 2005 Welded or locked diffs are great for rallying but are not legal on a street car with standard rego. Rally cars with locked diffs are registered with rally rego in the ACT and this is the same in all states a far as I am aware. With rally rego you can only drive the car on public roads to get to a rally, get the car fixed or in transport between stages etc... no day to day driving to and from work. Locked diffs are good but if you do not know how to drive them then don't. Comes down to either you like'em or hate'em, can driv'em or can not driv'em. Quote
dysolve Posted July 14, 2005 Author Report Posted July 14, 2005 it is only illegal to have a welded diff not a diff locker... well as far as i know i passed rego with mine... and why would they sell difflockers if they where illegal? the best one that i know for is the detroit locker very simple but very strong its only down fall is the "clunk" noise when it ingauges. can be know to do it a few times in a small corner... does any body know the real reason why race cars have lockers? Super Jamie Posted July 14, 2005 Report Posted July 14, 2005 and why would they sell difflockers if they where illegal? competition usage, duh Quote
demuire Posted July 14, 2005 Report Posted July 14, 2005 Competition cars have lockers because they are cheaper than LSD's. Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted July 14, 2005 Report Posted July 14, 2005 But Corolla's are built to do donuts...:) And NOTHING is illegal....unless u get caught :n: It's also illegal to have my car on the bumb stops...along with it being absolutely useless to drive with and uncomfortable...but DAYUM does it look better haha It's also illegal to have a tv running in your car while you are driving when the driver can see the screen....but it makes long trips and boring stops in peak hour traffic that much more fun. There are alot of things that you can do to a car that are both illegal..and impractical...but at the end of the day, it's your car and you can do what you like......and I just happen to love having a locker!!!! Quote
Super Jamie Posted July 14, 2005 Report Posted July 14, 2005 it's still illegal, you're just not getting busted for it i agree with your theory tho, it's called "calculated risk" Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 haha I know it's still illegal...I was just mucking around every bloody thing is illegal these days, can't even rob a bank anymore Quote
Trendact Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 I have known of guys that have gone over the pits and passed rego with welded diffs, just that it was not picked up by the guy doing the inspection or he just did not give a toss. Just coz things are illegal to use on a car or whatever does not mean it is illegal to sell it. If there is still a market for it even if legally it can not be used people will still sell it until they make it illegal to sell it. There maybe some forms of diff lockers that are legal as some 4WD were sold with them. Not sure if they still are or not but, been many years since I looked at buying a new 4WD. Quote
dysolve Posted July 16, 2005 Author Report Posted July 16, 2005 any 4wd that is constant 4wd must have a diff locker except for mitsu's they have electronic traction control, Quote
Super Jamie Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 air lockers and such are legal, landcruisers come out with them. but it wouldn't surprise me to learn they're legal because you can turn them on and off from the cabin, and the "locked" setting is intended for off-road use only i also wouldnt try driving it round with it locked because it would be a total pig in a fourby and is probably grounds for a neg driving fine Quote
