rjenman Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Hi guys I've heard a rumour that H4 12V 60/55W bulbs can be put into older cars such as a KE70 using an "after-market housing" for the bulbs and want to know if its true. Admittedly, I probably don't understand enough about electrics to know whether this is a stupid question or not, but just wondering if anyone knows of a bulb housing that goes straight in for a KE70 and houses H4 bulbs, since i've heard this from a guy at an autoparts store and i'm not sure whether he was just completely off his face on trying to make a sale. if its true it would be pretty good. Looking to upgrade KE70 headlights any suggestions aside from this welcome. cheers Rodney p.s. not really keen to do the dual headlight upgrade unless it magically turns out to be the cheapest, easiest way to upgrade ;) Quote
Taz_Rx Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 I think the main thing would be just using a non-sealed beam headlight, and then you can just put what ever globe you want in it. Considering that the face-lift square headlight KE55's didn't have sealed beams, I doubt a k'sev would. Just check if you can remove the globe from the housing (rather than it all being 1x sealed unit) and you should be right to go. As for aftermarket housing, you could get something like this to mount them in.... http://cgi.ebay.com.au/7-Clear-Head-Lights...=item35a62ccafe Quote
altezzaclub Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Do this before you do anything! http://www.ke70.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1856&hl= The stock lights are great providing they are switched by relays instead of running the power back to earth through the dimmer switch. That resistance just kills the brightness of the bulbs. Quote
KENut Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Some KE70's have sealed beams, some don't. Mine had sealed beams, so I got new housings and bulbs. Quote
rjenman Posted February 5, 2010 Author Report Posted February 5, 2010 has anyone done this? i'd be keen to know what housings screw straight on in place of the old sealed beams so i could just go to the wreckers and rip them off something else Quote
parrot Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Some KE70's have sealed beams, some don't. Mine had sealed beams, so I got new housings and bulbs. Well there is your answer. Go look at the wreckers for non sealed beams. I have (illegal) 55/100w H4 inserts in my AE86. Would recommend installing a relay supply to the lights and using grunty wiring to the actual bulb from the relay to maximise performance and avoid problems with melted wiring and possible fires.... 7shades Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Have a look at the wreckers for newer hilux, hiace, liteace, etc etc. The glass unit itself is exactly the same size, just the brackets are different. All you need is the headlight to put into the KE bracket. Basically anything with that size rectangular headlight will fit, and if its a non-sealed unit it will be a normal H4 bulb. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted February 8, 2010 Report Posted February 8, 2010 Have a look at the ebay link I posted. That lists all of the vehicles that housing will fit so it also tells you what cars to look out for at the wreckers. :) Quote

7shades Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 I want the black ones. Pity about the shipping price tag. These wouldnt be legal here would they? Nope. Gotta be ADR approved. Not that you're likely to be booked unless the police orificer is particularly clued-in, But still... I'd say the black ones would draw more attention to themselves than the normal reflective type. jono1986 Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 You can get straight changover units from places like sprint auto's, i got some for my 35 for 20 bucks each. whacked some of those super white lights in them and now they're about 7 million times better. Providing you get your headlights aimed.... Quote
rjenman Posted February 12, 2010 Author Report Posted February 12, 2010 Hey guys, this is a message from the ebay seller of those crazy black projector headlights (item 180446680972 on ebay, the first link posted above of the two): Dear rjenman, Hello. Yes, they take H4's Thanks! - speed_daddy I did a quick search about ADR approval and ( i might be wrong) but it seems that as long as you have ADR approved bulbs (like H4) then its all legal. I do not know this for sure though. Quote
