lanceishere Posted January 31, 2010 Report Posted January 31, 2010 so i have some new shifter bushings on the way because my gearbox feels REALLY sloppy, and i can't seem to be able to pull my gearstick apart :D i managed to pull the shifter assembley off the gearbox (and snap one of the bolts in half! :) ) and then i pulled the assembley off the stick (looks like i'm missing a bushing) but it's all a real pain in the hiney with all 3 of the rubber boot things on the stick still. so how to i pull the upper part of the gear stick (that the gear knob screws onto) off of the lower part of the gear stick? it looks threaded, but i can't get any movement from it. also, how do i pull the busted bolt out of my gearbox? i don't like the thought of only having 3 bolts holding my shifter on... pic is of the busted bolt, and he top of it next to a good one Quote
RainWarriorDregs Posted January 31, 2010 Report Posted January 31, 2010 can't help you with the shifter assembly, but i know to get out the snapped bolt you can use a bolt extractor. i think one brand is "easyout". basically it has a reverse drill piece on it that drills into the broken bolt then you ease it the opposite direction with some multigrips to get the sucker out, i think if that makes sense. good liuck! Taz_Rx Posted January 31, 2010 Report Posted January 31, 2010 These are the ones mentioned above.... http://cgi.ebay.com.au/SCREW-EXTRACTOR-SET...=item45f0877fa1 However nearly ever time I've used one of those reverse thread ones I've also snapped that off in the bolt too. There is another type (which I can't find on ebay) which are just a tapered square shape. You drill a hole, tap the extractor in with a hammer then remove. I've always had a lot more success with these. As for splitting the shifter, there's not really an easy way. Last time I had to do it I just clamped the lower (thin) part in a bench vise and the used a set of multigrips on the thick part and swung on it until the rubber inner broke. Replace the bushes and then just use some siccaflex to glue it back together. Quote
altezzaclub Posted January 31, 2010 Report Posted January 31, 2010 Either get a rag in the gearbox lever hole or put some wide tape across it. You don't want anything going down there, be it dirt, metal drill filings or even a bolt! The Easyouts are slightly flexible then snap, so if you're using one feel for when the spanner is flexing the Easyout and if it hasn't worked don't force it any more. The only other way I can suggest is to drill the bolt out until there's only a mm left of it & collapse it, but the first hole you drill must be right in the middle. Quote
lanceishere Posted February 3, 2010 Author Report Posted February 3, 2010 so... in theory... if i drilled a small hole in the centre and tapped a sharp phillips head into said hole and i should be able to unscrew it? Quote
Taz_Rx Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 Doubt it. The bolt snapped because its tight in the hole. Do you think you can put more torque through a phillips head screw driver than what it takes to break a bolt? :jamie: Quote
lanceishere Posted February 3, 2010 Author Report Posted February 3, 2010 it broke because i screwed it the wrong way... Quote
Evan G Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 (edited) get a torx bit, looks like a star *, there the best also why do you wanna dismantle the gear stick for? Edited February 3, 2010 by Evan G Quote
lanceishere Posted February 3, 2010 Author Report Posted February 3, 2010 get a torx bit, looks like a star *, there the best also why do you wanna dismantle the gear stick for? thanks man, have a few of those lying around... and i wanted to pull the boots off, kind of impossible without pulling the stick apart Quote
styler Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 (edited) yeah the torx bits are best, erwin tools make a set of extractors (torx style bits) that work really well, philips head are no good and easy outs are hit and miss. else get a bolt extractor mobile van to come out for guaranteed success. Evan G Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 the tesnsion is off the bolt so it should come out very easy! even try get a small punch and slowly tap/ undo the bolt out Quote
SLO-030 Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 If Lance "screwed it the wrong way" this means two things; He's done it up rather than un-done it, meaning its TIGHT in there Or He's crossed threaded it and since it's broken, its probably TIGHT in there. Either of the above sucks. If you don't feel confident doing the extracting yourself, get a local bolt extractor guy out. Sometimes ALOT easier than stuffing around yourself, and they got all the right tools ;) Quote
lanceishere Posted February 4, 2010 Author Report Posted February 4, 2010 i screwed it the wrong way, the top of the bolt (which was all that was stopping it from screwing further into the hole) snapped off, thus releiving the tension on the bolt, it is now no-longer tight, just in the hole =D Quote
lanceishere Posted February 4, 2010 Author Report Posted February 4, 2010 thanks everyone! got the little bastard of a bolt out... found a little bolt extractor in tin of old drill bits i have while looking for a small drill bit... drilled a ~2mm hole and just used the bolt extractor ;) Quote
