Hey fellas,

just bought my first rolla, an 80 model KE55 stock as a rock, pick it up 9am tomorrow. my mate has a spare ca18det sitting in his workshop gathering dust and my plans are to slot it in the rolla with a shortened hilux diff. just wondering if anyones gone through this mod before and knows whats needed to get it plated if possible for rego , also what brake upgrades etc you did along the way .

cheers

G`day mate, You are gunna have some hard work ahead of you doing the conversion legally. If you Google "Qld Transport vehicle mods" you can download a brochure that tells you what has to be engineered and what doesn`t.

Then, if you are a P plater you won`t be able to drive it anyway. Think carefully before you begin coz there`s heaps of follow on mods that you will have to do to get it engineered such as brake upgrade etc.

Not trying to put you off, but .............

Good luck with the conversion.

Old Fella.

pretty sure its doable, ring qld transport and talk to them, its the best way.

search here and toymods and you will see what other mods people ahve done, then run it by ur engineer before doing it, so he can tell you if he will be happy with that amount of stopping power for that amount of horsepower.

as was said, don't forget licensing restrictions if you are a P plater

cheers guys , I'm doing the work myself ( been a mechanic for 10yrs ) and have access to a full workshop with everything i need in it. I'm used to wedeging engines in and out of old holdens though so don't know what brakes of what car are the easiest to fit on these and what diff i should use i was thinking shortened hilux maybe? also I'm 26yo so no sucky p plate restrictions for me :)

The best idea would be to find an engineer now and ask them what they require.

Too many times have I heard of people building a car and then coming unstuck at the engineering stage.

if your serious and have a rough idea what you wanna do, which it seems you do, the engineer I'm using is earl ********, he is actually passionate about cars and will do his best to argue with qld transport to get what you want. number is 0417 *** ***

yes a shortened hilux diff is a good option, theres not alot of bolt in options.

another good one is a holden borg warner with a decent lsd in it, seeings as the hilux lsds are shit unless you get someone who knows what theyre doing to have a play with them.

as i said, check out toymods and here, everything has been done before so you can see what works for you :)

*edit* pulled engineers details to save him mass phone calls, contact me if you are serious and want his info :D

The official qld transport weight of your car is 930kg, so yes very legal.

The required upgrades to suit the engine is entirely in your engineers hands.

the book that the engineers go by leaves it entirely in the hands of the engineer what is 'sufficient' upgrades.

generally diff, front and rear brake upgrades are all thats required, but you have to build the car keeping the engineer that you use in the loop at all times, some are

very fussy, so it helps to use a recommended one.

cheers for your help guys, had a bit of free time on my hands today and did a heap or research. as you have said i can legaly modify it easily due to its weight so the project is a go ahead! yay! also had a good chat with the engineer who will be signing off on it and from what my plans are he is more then happy to sign off on it when its done ! a mate has put this setup recently in a datto ute and is using a rx7 lsd diff has any one used one in the corolla and has any feed back ?

@ love ke - thanks for the engineer contact its very helpful of you

cheers

was that who you rung? he was recommended to me by a local shop (who do some unbelievable work) and i couldnt believe how helpful he was after ringing 5 or so ones off the qld transport list.

wait til you meet him, he sounds very different to how he looks i thought haha.

it can pay to get what he agreed to in writing, i didnt, because i keep changing the plans, i need to get hold of him soon and run the new idea by him, and after that i will probably get it all nutted out on paper so when it comes sign off day, we are both on the same page...

No mate , my best mate owns a workshop on rocklea and he has his own engineer for mod plating work that he does , mainly super chargers and gearbox and diff stuff ran it all past him and he has agreed to sign it off and ate once work is done as what I want to do falls below the forced induction capacity limits for a ke55. I have the engine which I will pull down on the weekend I just need to find out what LSD diffs people have been putting in these , I know I will probably need to shorten etc etc and also what are easy brake upgrades for it too
