78_7kRolla Posted February 3, 2010 Author Report Posted February 3, 2010 Thanks Adam. I may need them for some fiddly bits for the motor. And with the fuel pump my old man has already explained a fair bit about it to me. We just need some time to get it all done. Well here we go again! Nice work chief, will have to come visit one day and check this out in person. And you really are showing us all why you won the princess award on the GOR trip! I'm not sure if you even know you won! JP Haha thanks Jarrad. I figured i'd won that award as Stu may have 'let it slip'. I graciously accept the award though! Just need to pick it up from webers place first. Anyway, i will put some progress pics in a post later on tonight. Quote
78_7kRolla Posted February 3, 2010 Author Report Posted February 3, 2010 (edited) Today i got stuck into it a bit. Pulled the radiator out to be sent off to have a new brass core installed. Found a bottom radiator hose a little better suited to give more clearance to the alternator. Pulled of the what appears to be the original water pump (the bearings were stuffed) and found that the hose coming from the pump to the heater was completely kinked! Also pulled off the extractors to be sent off to sand blasting. The rocker cover then came off to inspect leaks and also i re-tensioned the head. The cams i found in it have genuine toyota markings but appear to be slightly lumpy due to the duration set on the lobes. Bit confused here really. But from what i can see the motor appears to be in good shape. Here are some pics. Edited February 4, 2010 by 78_7kRolla Quote
seabiscuit Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 Jealous! :D Hard to decide what I want to do with my 2-door when I see lots of other brilliant ones! 2T-G, 4A-GE, 4A-GTE, 5K... What to choose. How does the 2T-G go (tell me once you've got it to the standard you want) ;) Quote
silverra23 Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 2TG's go very well! Parts are a bit hard to get and expensive is the down side to them. 4AGE's are more modern and better supported in the after market. Old school is cool though. You get stuck in don't you Matt! Very impressive ;) Quote
78_7kRolla Posted February 4, 2010 Author Report Posted February 4, 2010 (edited) Got some more work done today/tonight ;) Pulled off the top radiator support because it was pretty scratched. Gave it a light sand and it will be heading off tomorrow to my panel beater friend's place along with the boot which has crow's feet. Should come back nice and fresh! Today i also removed, tested, cleaned and then painted both the alternator and starter motor. While they were off i also cleaned up that side off the block and painted it gloss black. Also polished up some bits like the timing cover and battery clamp. They came up pretty good as well. Got the extractors back from my friend who only gave them a light sandblast because of the rust. They still came back with two small holes! After they were welded up i sprayed them high temp silver before fitting them. Here are some progress pics. Starter motor before Alternator cleaned up Extractor holes welded up You can see surface rust underneath where the radiator support normally covers and the dull timing cover After shot Rad support Edited February 4, 2010 by 78_7kRolla Quote
78_7kRolla Posted February 5, 2010 Author Report Posted February 5, 2010 (edited) Got some more progress for everyone today. Pretty straitforward. Got water pump, thermostat housing and rocker cover back on today. Here are some happy snaps. All in all it was a day of decent progress. Edited August 29, 2010 by 78_7kRolla Quote
Doogs Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 Neat job on the engine Matt, those tidyups really raise the visual appeal of the car. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted February 8, 2010 Report Posted February 8, 2010 haha the good old busted TA22 T50 shifter lockout! :) The shifter actually lifts up to clear the gate for reverse. Every TA22 T50 I've seen though has been forced into reverse (without being lifted) and has hence bent or broken the gate. That was probably the main culpret for your shifting issues. Quote
78_7kRolla Posted February 8, 2010 Author Report Posted February 8, 2010 Thanks Doogs i'm trying to get it half presentable. Oh and thanks for that info on the shift locker Si. I had no idea about that and it did appear to be broken off too. Got my radiator back today. Looks real nice and had a brass core fitted. Quote
smeetsy1 Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 shift-lockers... what a joke... no-one told me when i got my car, ha. i like/want this  Quote
78_7kRolla Posted February 10, 2010 Author Report Posted February 10, 2010 (edited) shift-lockers... what a joke... no-one told me when i got my car, ha. i like/want this  Haha i had no clue either! Today i scored majorly! At the tafe library i found a genuine Toyota T-series engine manual. Pretty much photocopied everything on the 2T-G motor  EDIT Here is a shot i took on the weekend Edited February 10, 2010 by 78_7kRolla Quote
ke71-rolla Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 (edited) Dude loving the car, old school twin cam, sounds like sex in an engine bay to me!! Your rims also, I'm assuming you probably bought the car with them on, but their just widened steelies aren't they?, which I'm assuming you can just go to the local tyre shop... What kinda cost involved in it? The whole white YOKOHAMA writing and the big profile suits the car to a tee Edited February 11, 2010 by ke71-rolla Quote

The whole white YOKOHAMA writing and the big profile suits the car to a tee Thanks mate. Yes i bought the car from the previous owner with the wheel and tyre package that it has. However the original owner actually had them fitted with a 6.5inch outer rim. Most specialist wheel repair/restoring joints should be able to do it for you. Best of luck. Quote
78_7kRolla Posted February 13, 2010 Author Report Posted February 13, 2010 So guys, today in one last effort to get it going for picnic at hanging rock tomorrow, the old man and I tried our best to tune this thing. After making marginal improvement from run-on balancing and adjusting the mixtures the car was still hesitating when accelerating from low revs. To solve this will unfortunately involve removal of the twin webers and go over them from start to finish. Here are some more progress shots from today. Freshly painted radiator support back on. You can also see the fresh radiator and hoses. New wheel cylinders, also included a good bleed all round. Thought i'd show you the front calipers polished by the original owner! All the suspension gear that is yet to go in. Mmmm nolathane... Quote
