We have a 89 FJ62 Landcruiser for sale, its a two owner 159000km car thats hardly ever been off road, 3F petrol motor, bar work, good Reese hitch, chrome rims etc.... we bought it for off road driving which we never got the chance to do. We bought it after being told that the 62 series were better on juice and offroad then the 80 series, were more up to date that the 60 series and were the last of the pre-electronical nightmare cars to come out - I'd like to see someone fix a 80 series in the bush with minimal tools like they would to a 62 series.

It is an excellent car off road in the times we took it off road, will do beaches etc. easy and rutty tracks quite easily.

However, the HiLux is considered a better vehicle off road with a lift kit, 33" or 35" tyres and some air locker diffs, however people tend to steer away from them because they are prone to rolling - being such as narrow car and all.

The Suzuki Sierras are awesome cars off road, especially with a lift kit and meaty tyres. They are so light, they will get down tracks that bigger 4wds would have no hope on, and when you perform a turbo/engine swap or preferably both, I would presume they would go alot better off road. These really are better cars because not only they are better in the bush, but more economical and cheaper to buy as well.

Also, supposably Patrols are better off road than Landcruisers.

Unless you have 4WD experience, buy a boonger first than upgrade, it will save you a hell of a lot of hassle when you damage the car.

If you are going to do some lesser offroading, just buy a 2WD dual cab ute (Rodeo, Hilux) and whack some 4by tyres on it - my mate did it and his car is awesome to drift in the mud - the only reason he likes 4wding.

LandCruiser 80 series are meant to be WAY better than the current model (100 series) off-road. They sell far quicker from used lots than 100 series models do, and maintain their value pretty damn well. There are HEAPS of mods available (HiLux's and 80 series are about equal in number of off-road mods available), but as they're a LandCruiser, while you can get performance bits (eg turbos and superchargers), they're more targetted at improving torque for off-road use and better highway acceleration.

Id take a 100series over a 80series ANYDAY.... Aslong as its a 1999 model.... in 2000 they went from Live suspension to independant. live is a crappier ride quality and independant is bettor on road.. Its the same as used in any standard road car (ie commodore)... live offroad gives you more grip.... so in saying that if u went a 1999 model its as good as any 80 series, usally less kays, better condition(with alll the people that don't take them off road).

All the suzuki range are great......... Ive had many of them as bush bashers and they just keep going.. Weve rolled them, hit trees, jumped them, taken them swimming and revved the tits off it for excessive amounts of time and they kept going... only problems ever had were suspension colapsed. after the swim it needed some cleaning, and the points went in one of em....

Ok here we go... I am currently building a 84 hilux for rock crawling.

the following all depends on what you want to do with the truck.

please keep in mind 4wding completly different to anyother type of driving just about everything is backwards

the lower the gearbox gears the better

solid (beam) axle is better the IDS

ABS is dangerous

Diesel is best for many reason's ,engine braking, low reving, low fuel useage and heaps more.

the less electronics the better.

the list can keep going

bigger is not always better

Sierra's are the best suziki's off road... more mod's available and there a dime a dozen, the new sierra is a jimny... they only down fall to the sierra and the jimny are the diesel motor is not available in Aust. do not buy a jimny made before 2000or the softtop they have an old engine in them.

don't pay anything more the 5k for a sierra

my 2000 model jimny is for sale I want $13000 for it but anybody from the rolla club can have it for $11500.

do not buy a surf they are NOT the same as a 4runner EVERY thing is just about different. It would be easier to list what is the same then different.

Hilux's/4runners are the best all round 4wd, theres heaps of them around, I would say the models with the 2.4D (2L) engine are the best but they are getting old now, Do NOT buy one with the V8 conversion done as the chasis WILL be bent (the engine is to heavy) and for the least amount of money you can have a great 4wd.. the basic setup is two inch lift kit with tough Dog shocks and old man emu spring and a set of BFG A/T tyres the size to buy is 15X10.50. these mods will cost less the 5k.

don't pay any more then $10k for a 2.8 hilux/4runner but must have less the 200000km on the clock

60 and 80 series landcrusier are proberly the best of road but the cost an arm and a leg to fix, you will not get change from 10k for engine rebuild and not much change from 3k for gearbox rebuild. any 60 series is good but only buy an early model 80 series with beam axle,

60 series $8000 max

80 series $14000 max

I have seen to many fancy 4wd broken down , I refuse to comment on anything Mitsu.

if you have any further questions just ask me...

regards

Hmmm a 5K powered suzuki sierra................I think I know what my next project is gonna be when I finish the Ke30. Now all I need to do is find a place to store it and convince the missus that it's a GOOD idea :(

Work out how often you're going of road with it. Work out how hard core off road you want to go. Work out how much you like comfort around town, and how often you drive around town.

Early Hiluxs are uncomfortable trucks that have kidney belts that fall from the roof when you hit bumps. Sierras do it hard on the highway. Vitaras are nicer, nut you sacrifice off road ability.

I own a DiD TD Pajero. :)
