hey all I'm having trouble with my ignition i started the car once and left if to warm up came back to find it had stalled went to start it again and ran for a tiny bit but assoon as i let go of the key it cut out. it done this several times i just thought bugger the fuels gone. tryed again once i got it to flat ground done the same thing then i noticed that if i turn it over and then hold the key half way between ON and START just anuf for the starter to cut out that it would run fine but once i let go of the key it cuts out!! :D

help would be much appreciated

cheers scott.

Hi Scott,

Sounds like the starting resistor next to the ignition coil has gone O/C. The ignition key shorts this resistor out, whilst starting, but places the resistor in circuit, when you let go of the key & it springs back. Temporaily short out the resistor & see if it runs OK, when you let the key go. If it runs OK, then replace resistor.

On the right track, but not quite correct. :)

You have 2x power sources to your coil:

1, normal "ON" power which runs through the ballast resistor to drop the voltage to 6~8v.

2, "start" power, which is 12v to help start the engine better.

After the car has started and you let the key go back to the "ON" position the "start" power drops out.

So your problem is a fault somewhere in the "ON" power circuit. This could be the ballast itself or the wiring to it. Flick your key to on (without engine running) and use a test light on either side of the ballast resistor. If you have power on one side but not the other then the BR is rooted. If you don't have it on either side then there is a problem with wiring to the BR.
