psi18t Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 Hey I need some advice on what to do with my Corolla. On really hot days my car cuts out and turns off. When this happens it takes a minute before the car will start again but then it will go might do it once or twice more and then the car will be ok. Apart from happening on hot days there is no distinct conditions on when it happens. It can happen at any rev range from idle to high revs and in any gear. I only use 98 octane fuel. The car has been to 4 workshops including a dealership and is still not fixed so i am wondering if anyone knows a good workshop which may be able to diagnose the car. The car has light mods boost controller, exhaust, standard ecu. I am located in Sydney and any help will be greatly appreciated. Also i don't care how much the workshop charges i just want my car fixed Quote
jono1986 Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 What year sportivo is it? If its a later model, and you haven't already looked into it, you should look into a workshop with a scan tool. Then they'll be able to test most of the electrical and test actuators and stuff like that. Otherwise try another ecu and see if that works, i mean if you can find one Quote
SoulSearcher Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 (edited) *face palm* not another one..... ok, there's three of us on here that have had problems: 1 had to replace his entire ECU (Terminal - Karllos bought his) 1 had some soldering on their ECU (Sportivo65) I had to put in a new distributor (Soulsearcher) check-out Sportivo65's, SoulSearcher's, Karrlos's and Terminal's posts for more reading Edited January 22, 2010 by SoulSearcher Quote
SoulSearcher Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 some possible things: take it to a dealership and ask them to put it on the diagnostic set up, there could be something more to the story and it might through up an error code (this happened to me) which makes life easy if it will. you could TRY a replacement distributor (costs about $85 it's the same as the non turbo AE112) mines been running with the new one for about 4 months, no more problems  there are tons of resistors on the board of your ecu and each one triggers a different fault if it's faulty, this can be time consuming and frustrating (Sportivo_65) or damn right annoying (as in terminals' case). Karllos Posted January 22, 2010 Report Posted January 22, 2010 Having bought TERMINALS car that hasnt had the dizzy issue "touchwood" it is always at the back of my mind that i might need to replace it The ecu is still quite alright since it has been replaced previous owner had a second hand warranty and had the entire ECU replaced at EXTREME cost and time inclusive (approx 5 months) and first quoted $15,000 in the end was considerably less but still expensive. Look into those 2 major things first as it is only doing it on hotter days try the dizzy first because of the fact that if the ecu was faulty that it would be doing it much more frequently and in different climates. as well as it is chump change compared to an ECU. Hope the info helps Karl. Quote
psi18t Posted February 11, 2010 Author Report Posted February 11, 2010 (edited) Thank you for all your help didnt realise i was the only one who had this problem. The car has already been to a dealership and the scan tool showed up no error codes. The distributor has already been done Edited February 11, 2010 by psi18t Quote
Jimbob Posted August 22, 2012 Report Posted August 22, 2012 Hi, sorry to bring back an old thread, but i really need some help. I just bought one of these and 4 days later the ecu blows up !! Not a happy camper! I can't justify 10k to replace the ecu as i onlly paid 9 for the car. I want to know if there is an aftermarket ecu wich i can use instead of the standard toyota one. I used to own a Skyline and i know there are heaps of suitable ecu's to choose from, so i can't believe there is only 1 option here. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thankyou Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted August 22, 2012 Report Posted August 22, 2012 There is highly unlikely to be a drop-in aftermarket ECU unless you go full standalone like Haltech/Wolf etc. Remember that the TOMS-tuned ECU in these things was esentially a one-off, only 110 of the 112 Sportivos were made and only in Australia so there isn't anywhere near the aftermarket support that you would get from a JDM car like a Skyline. Jimbob Posted August 23, 2012 Report Posted August 23, 2012 yeah pretty much what i was thinking. along the lines of wolf or something. wondering if anyone has done it, or knows which is suitable and how difficult it is. I am expecting a fight with the caryard i bought it from about repairs under warranty, so looking at all bases. If i can get it done cheaper than 10k+ they are more likely to come to the party.. They claim that as its over 10 yrs old, the standard 3 mth warranty is not included. Quote
19914afc Posted August 23, 2012 Report Posted August 23, 2012 The stat warranty should still apply, I would try and tell them it will be cheaper to get a aftermarket one. We had one at work that had a dud ecu saw the cost of a new one from toyota and pretty sure they ended up getting a aftermarket one as they never came back. Quote
Jimbob Posted August 25, 2012 Report Posted August 25, 2012 according to consumer affairs i can TRY and pressure them with the act that says a product must be of reasonable standard, basically, but thats about it. So pretty hard to prove, really. Apparently i can get a re-con ecu for under $500, anyone know anything about re-con ecu?? also looked into haltech, would that be a straight swap? or would i need harnesses and other bits as well?
