Hi All,

My '94 Sprinter has now done over 300K kms and I'm looking at giving it a bit of a"tune up".

Has anyone got any suggestions to what can be done to the current motor, i.e. bore - stroke - turbo.

Or dropping another engine into it, preferably, with a minimum of fuss.

Any ideas will be much appreciated.

Thanks

What sort of gains are you after? The 7AFE doesn't have much off-the-shelf stuff that you can do to it, it's a bit of an un-loved orphan in that regard, but a refresh, exhaust/intake and maybe even a bit of headwork you can go chasing 4AGEs.

As for swapping in a whole new engine, your options basically boil down to (in order of complexity): 4AGE 20v, 4AGZE (probably only the last of them will be suitable), 7AGE hybrid, 3SGE/GTE. None of those are "easy" tasks though, and all will require some measure of custom fabrication as well as re-wiring the car.

Thanks for the options.

The 7AGE hybrid sounds interesting. From what I have read, this would be a combo of a 4AGE and my existing 7AFE engines.

Would I get away with the purchase of just the motor (short or long?) or would I have to go for a front cut, with ecu, wiring loom etc.

7AGE = your 7AFE bottom end with a 4AGE head in a nutshell. It can be done dodgy (not recommended) by simply whacking a 4AGE head on your existing 7AFE and (carefully) fitting a Porsche 944 cambelt (and sorting out something for the exhaust). To be done properly you need to build one with proper pistons (for a good compression ration) and aftermarket EFI. as well as the above. 7AFE's reputadely don't have very strong bottom ends, so either way, I wouldn't be revving it hard on a regular basis. I made a dodgy one by replacing a stuffed 4AGE block with a 7AFE one, using all the same wiring, injectors (4AGE) etc. and it went really well, but I kept to a 6000 rpm rev limit. The above is all using a 4AGE 16 valve head (either bigport or smallport), but you can do the same thing with a 20 valve head, but you use a different cam belt (standard 4AGE, I think)

As most people suggest dropping a 4AGE20V into my AE102 Sprinter, I think its time to start looking around for someone to slip one in for me.

Are there any suggestions as to where I should start looking? I live on the Central Coast (NSW) so more than likely Sydney could be the most viable option.

Are there places around who "specialize" in engine work of this nature? Probably better to go to someone who has some done something like this before, I suppose.

Maybe someone who has had some experience remappping/reflashing ECUs as well.

Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

Would you have to swap to GZE pistons to run FI on a 7AGE 16v head combo?

FI = forced induction? If so, that sounds feasible, but apparently the rod/piston attachment (gudgeon pin) is different on 7AFE's versus *AG*E series engines. I would suggest that if you were going forced induction, custom or aftermarket pistons and rods would be the best option.

7AFE gudgeon pin is press-fit, 4AGE is floating.
