hmm ive never had a drama with oil filters...

always just bought ryco from supercheap, z386 for the 4age, and whatever is specified in the little book for the 4k (when i had it). like $8 or so!

though admitedly i only changed the oil once in the 4k, over 2yrs.....though i only did around 10,000 so i guess thats ok.

i do recall that once with the 4k i used to get a very bad rattle when i first started it up, but then the oil pressure came up (light went off) and it went nice and smooth. i think i fixed that by changing the oil and filter. i think maybe the guy before me put too thin of oil in...meh i dunno. it was only a 4k!

i think the main thing with oil filters is just to keep changing them when you change oil.

and don't thrash the car when its cold! and don't rev it when you start it. i can't stand seeing someone start a car and instantly rev it! GYAR!!!

the 4age being EFI has the advantage (over the 4k) of being able to easily start it with no accelerator input at all. i generally start my engine with a few mins to spare before i have to go, sometimes i even start it and then go and put my shoes on or something.

just a matter of leaning in the door and turning the key. starts about the 2nd time with no throttle (gets VERY close on the first go). revs stay nice and low for the first few secs too, since i don't have the idle up hooked up.

ok ill stop rambling now....

now that is interesting. the 418 goes in a lot of upside down applications, eg a 1gr-fe and a 1kd-ftv in the latest hiluxes, and they don't seem to have oil pressure issues. It is probably a much better filter than the 68.

and I know that it fits on a corolla too, I've seen one fitted mistakenly to a camry with a 2az-fe, which is normally a 432, and I've also seen a 386 fitted mistakenly to a 1az-fe in a rav4. conclusion to come to:

68, 418, 432, 386, 9, and probably a stack of others all will fit a k motor.

Next oil change I'm fitting 418's and I will see how they go!!

Interesting. I wouldn't have thought that a hilux type filter would fit a corolla. In toyota terms we have two main types: D and E, with a specific number added to the letter for different applications. EG: E type filters, take the E1 for example are used on smaller cars like Yaris, current model corollas, older camry's (5S-FE), E2 are current Camrys and so on. D's, like the D2 are normally used for hilux's, prado's etc.

All "E" filters are the same mounting face size (if you understand what I mean, don't know what the term is for it)

Same with all "D" filters.

I think the problem is that you don't know you're having problems! If the filter media area is small it fills up with gunk, blocks and then the bypass valve in the filter opens and it just bypasses all the oil. So unfiltered oil circulates until the next time you change a filter, and the only thing you know is that the bearings are worn out.

Same if the filter media is too coarse, the oil still goes round and round, but it carries a lot of grit that chews out all the bearing over a time, but its not a problem you see until the engine needs a rebuild.

I doubt that there's much difference within say Toyota filters across all the models except the fitting size. So if it screws onto the motor and seals nicely it will probably do the job. It certainly seems that a lot of filter numbers are interchangeable.

The Z386 is the Ryco version of the toyota 4AF/G and 3SF/G 5SFE oil filter. Spins straight on to a K series motor.

i had a look at these filter at supercheap,

the z386 is about half the size but the holes (were the filterd oil comes out) are smaller? so maybe the the z68 has better flow?

I'm gonna give the z386 ago next service ;)

thanks for the info felix legend!

I have just changed the engine oil, was previously running a z68 oil filter and castrol magnatec 15w40. I am now running a z418 (which is the equivalent of a 90915yzzd2) and penrite hpr10 10w50 semi-synthetic oil.

previously, oil pressure light would take a few seconds to go out, engine had a small rattle on startup, and when stopped you could hear oil trickling quite fast into the sump.

now, oil light goes out instantly, seems to hold pressure for ages and ages when the engine is turned off, no rattle on startup anymore, and you can't audibly hear oil trickling rapidly into the sump when you switch it off.

I would HIGHLY RECCOMMEND that EVERYBODY switches to a z418. Can the z68, just use the z418!!!

The toyota genuine filter is a 909150002 i think, which is listed on the front of the z418 box (ie this oil filter replaces the following: <insert list of toyota part numbers here> ) so I don't know how we came to all be using z68's in the aftermarket parts books....
