greenmac80 Posted June 22, 2011 Author Report Posted June 22, 2011 ok so lonsdale engine works let me down and its getting delayed till friday so the car won't be back together till sat arvo Quote
ninja-philbo Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 sucks to hear about the delay man but I'm sure with the whole weekend to work on it and ur quality of work it will come back better than before Quote
greenmac80 Posted June 23, 2011 Author Report Posted June 23, 2011 well i picked the head up and it tested ok but they didn't face it.. the head is warped... so he gave me the option... the machinist reckons that with new headbolts and a graphite gasket it'll cplamp down just fine but no gaurantee... but if i get him to straighten it it'll be a full reco and cost 500 ish bucks... so i'm going to bolt it down and fingers crossed she'll be ok if not i've only lost a head gasket. if it work sweet as and i can start searching for my new motor.. 5e. Evan G Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 if its warped can't they machine it straight or will they take too much off witch will result in 13:1 compression? Quote
greenmac80 Posted June 23, 2011 Author Report Posted June 23, 2011 nah u can face it but it would still mean that te top of the head where te cams bolt to will be warped and the cams will get worn or seize up. Quote
greenmac80 Posted June 23, 2011 Author Report Posted June 23, 2011 so the theory is bolt it down after cleaning it up and essentially bolting it down should flatten it out. and pull the top of the head where the cams are straight as well. its only bent 5 thou so not heaps the ghraphite gasket he thinks is quite forgiving and the new headbolts will help out as well as they are a torque to yeild bolt apparently.. so they'll settly in how they want to. basically i'll give a go if it works then yay.. but i'm now on the lookout for another head in good nick to get cleaned up as a back up. Evan G Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 or even go new arp headstuds. that should straighten her right out Quote
ninja-philbo Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 so keen to see this thing up and running Quote
oh what a nissan feeling! Posted June 24, 2011 Report Posted June 24, 2011 man be aware you risk breaking the camshaft as well, but i really hope things go well. do you know anyone with an alloy welder? Quote
greenmac80 Posted June 24, 2011 Author Report Posted June 24, 2011 alloy welder? yes but why? the head is bent 5thou top and bottom the idea is that bolting it back down will straighten it out... Quote
greenmac80 Posted June 26, 2011 Author Report Posted June 26, 2011 well all back together and still the same problem... the water is boiling in the head but not in the block... seems like a blockage but its been all flushed... thermostat was suggested but its brand new... i'm gonna gut my old one and put that in see if it fixes the boiling... Â what i really need is to see another 4e so i can have a look at how ALL the water lines go. and compare to mine.. perhaps i have something plumbed wrong. Â Â Quote
oh what a nissan feeling! Posted June 27, 2011 Report Posted June 27, 2011 Welder is how they can be straightened, but didnt read properly, 5 thou not worth trying. Â Did you compare head gaskets? I mean sit down and spend 10 mins comparing every little hole from old to new? I have had a few first hand experiences where mates have had this problem, one diffent hole in hg could cause lots of drama. Quote
ke70dave Posted June 27, 2011 Report Posted June 27, 2011 i would be VERY cautious about putting a head back on that wasn't straight. Â even if it is 5thou or whatever, its still not straight.... Â 5thou = 0.127mm, thats quite significant i would have thought? Â the $500 sounds about right, they would be re machining everything in the head, cam bearings, valve guides prolly too.... Â i did my mates head on his 98' 323 astina (huge over heat), to straighten the head, and buy a gasket set...not much change from 1100 bucks. almost replacement engine time. Quote
greenmac80 Posted June 27, 2011 Author Report Posted June 27, 2011 yeah oh well.. its back together and its now running properly well sorta... its not overheating anymore but there is a distinct power loss at approx 4000rpm really annoying.. i'm sure i'll figre it out. Quote
