olskool Posted December 27, 2009 Report Posted December 27, 2009 Here is the car guilty of slowing the progress on my conversion to my KE55. But I must say it has been a well worthwhile experience. It is the first time I have ever done a job such as this. It was a tiring one as I had only nights after my job to work on it. Anyway, it is an 1975 MS85 Crown Super Saloon. It's got all the jizz and jazz you could ask for back in the mid 70's. Power windows all round, central locking, power steering(as most crowns have), fully functional and quite impressively cold air conditioning, boot popper, automatic locking once you reach over 45km/h, automatic rear demister, rear passenger radio controls, antenna's for the radio are integrated in both the front and rear windscreens, engine bay light and plenty of stainless steel trims. ;) :y: :thumbsup: It is powered by an awesome 4M, which has been untouched and is proving very reliable as most old Toyota's do anyway. There are a couple of other things that I have done to it which don't come standard but I will post them up later. Anyway let the pictures do the talking. Hope you guys like it. :y: :) :D :y: Quote

It is seriously just so comfortable and smooth, after a bit of maintenance here and there I now have made EVERYTHING functional on the car. It is so amazing, I sometimes don't know what to do with myself, so many things to play with and only so many fingers. :thumbsup: Quote

olskool Posted December 27, 2009 Author Report Posted December 27, 2009 (edited) The rear I fabricated top hats which I welded to the inside ring of where the coil spring sits in the top. The top bracket which mounts to the airbag itself is on an angle for a reason. That is one secret with airbags. When the car is at its lowest stance the airbag must be perfectly level top and bottom. The other particular thing I did was to make sure that if I ever needed to I could quite simply change the coils back over. Nothing needs to be changed. This ring I got machined so that the airbag could fit perfectly inside. This is the beginning of what I did to the front. Edited December 27, 2009 by olskool Quote

olskool Posted December 27, 2009 Author Report Posted December 27, 2009 This is what I did for the front set-up. Initially it was hard because I had to start up the plasma cutter and cut a very large hole in the bottom arms. This hole was to suit the outside diameter of the machined rings. First though I welded a stainless plate on the bottom of the machined ring and drilled some drain holes and mounting holes for the airbag. The next part was very difficult, because again I had to somehow figure out where perfectly level both top and bottom of the airbag was at its lowest point. Once I got it though I welded in the ring and that was it. Another challenging job was relocating the shocks, but through much thinking and scratching of heads, I figured it out and it works well and is out of the way. Also about the radio I am not sure if it had self seeking. When I bought the car it had just a cd player in it with a gap above it where the pressure gauges are now. The radio's that used to come in the crown had a tape player aswell. So I was spewing that it didn't have that radio and tape player in it. ;) :thumbsup: Anyway here are some more photo's of the work I done. Quote

Good work on the mods. Have to agree with Evan though. Best thing I've seen these do is at a car importers. they used a crown to "remove" the cars suspended in the air in a shipping container. Drove it in and broke off the wood mounts and hey presto, drove the crown out with a car sitting on top. Needless to say roof was a little F&*ked. Also drove one at a dealership. it was the "loaner". Tended to jump into neutral when going over speedhumps. at about 60km/h! Looking forward to seeing the finished beast. Does she run hot? Quote
olskool Posted December 27, 2009 Author Report Posted December 27, 2009 (edited) No the 4M does not run hot. It really just runs perfect. Couldn't ask for better. As for the modifications, one thing I can say is that I have done all of this work in a manner that will allow me to swap everything back over to standard if it is ever needed. Other than that, I also will say that I have done my best to restore the car a little bit in the process aswell as keep it as standard looking as possible. As I mentioned before, the car came with no radio so I had big holes in the dash that I needed to fill up. In the boot there was no panel to cover the fuel tank, so I made one of them aswell. It is hard when you have to try and make do with what you have, and especially when you can't source out the original parts to fit back in. So here are some pictures of the airbags complete and the crown at its final stance. I truly hope you all enjoy. :thumbsup: Oh and by the way.
